Removing Corroded Antenna Mast S70 1999

I went to replace the broken-off antenna mast, and found it to be a bit corroded, and pliers don't seem to be enough to get it out. Any suggestions? Do I need to take the whole unit out to work on it?

Once you have removed the 18mm nut on top of the fender, all you will have left is the motor and shaft(which is one unit essentially).

Inside the large shaft, under the nut, is what is left of your antenna and a sleeve. Hopefully your new antenna has a new sleeve at the base.

You will need needle nose pliers to purchase enough old antenna to pull out. I have a pair of needle nose vice grips. If that is a total failure, then you will have to remove the motor from the inside and bring it to a work bench. Disassemble the motor from the shaft. It has been so long, I forgot how it is connected. Important: remember which direction the teeth in the white plastic are positioned - pointed toward the rear or forward. When you install the new mast, you will need to know this.

EDIT: dribble a little PBBlaster around the edges of the mast. Use sparingly.

Thanks! I think I can handle it from here.

I was using the pliers on my Leatherman, but I don't have needlenose Visegrips yet, that I can recall. I guess I ought to get a pair anyway.

Where should I look for PBBlaster? Or would WD-40 substitute?

Pocket tool pliers will not have enough grip. Even regular needle nose will do the job. WD-40 will work, it is just a cleaner and not a penetrating oil.

You may be missing the white plastic toothed worm that inserts down to the motor, unless the PO just cut the whole thing off with a pair of dikes.

The sleeve has a very small lip that covers the top edge of the tube coming up from the motor. Pry the left over mast away from the sleeve so that you can grab the edge of the mast and pull up. To get the sleeve out after the mast is out, I used a paint can opener of all things which looks like a bottle opener with a curved edge on the other end. Inserted down through the mast hole and grabbed the sleeve from the bottom and pulled straight out.

The PO might have unplugged the motor, removing the inside cover is a pain.
