2000 V70R K&N Filter Set up? V70-XC70 2000

I've put a K&N air filter in my V70R, and while I got a good seat-of-the-pants kick in full throttle performance, it's gas mileage actually decreased (mostly pretty sedate highway driving except for the ocassional pass where the other damned driver accelerates to _try_ to keep me from passing). I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes (as I've heard recommended to clear the computer of "memories" of the old filter) after installing it, too.

I've gone about 3000 miles since then, and I've actually lost 1.5 mpg. I'd keep the filter in just for the performance benefits, but I was wondering if anybody knew of something more that needs to be done to get the computer to change it's program based on the new air flow...

I tried searching on K&N, but I got too many hits with no useful information :-)

On an unrelated note - anyone know of a computer chip / replacement in the works for the 2000 R?

Thanks!

Mike

Do you live in an area with winter fuel? You know the kind with ethanol or ether added? I am getting about the same reduction in mpg that you report. I am chalking the reduction in my car to the fuel.

Matter of fact, yes. I'm in the Great North woods of Minnesota, though, and I don't think (?) they do the oxygenated fuel up here? Maybe I'm wrong. You bring up a good point, though. The mileage I'm referring to is mostly winter driving (though I got about equivalent mileage on a 80+mph trip to Florida - can you say wind resistance :-)

Could be it... Maybe I should reserve judgement until spring...

Mike

Re: 2000 V70R K&N Filter Set up? V70-XC70 2000

Mike,

Yes, there is a chip option for you. SCT has one, but they don't have a dealer in the states yet. That doesn't matter as they will send to you. I've been emailing them and they have been very helpful. AWE is reselling a GIAC chip for it too. Todd at AWE has asked me to check the chip's part number to confirm that they have a chip for me...something I haven't done. I'll hopefully get to this tomorrow or the next day. I'm probably going to go with the GIAC as I could get more local support out of AWE (I think they are a great company). I've purchased aftermarket items from AWE for my Audi and have never been disappointed.

SCT recommended putting in a better (non-OEM) air filter if you get a chip for the Volvo.

The one other thing keeping me from chipping is the transmission. I'm a little concerned that a chip (301-305hp) may put too much strain on the transmission. I've heard that it is rated to 300hp. This doesn't bode well for the warranty I would think.

I'm at 29000 miles on my 2000 'R' so I'm no too worried about the warranty. I do have an extended warranty out to 100k.

Bill

Keep in mind that with the 2000 'R' you will have to send your ECU in for reprogramming. I was told this by Todd and SCT. No spare ECUs are available. I did not ask for the details on why this is. I can appreciate that they are still trying to break all the new codes used for the 2000MY.
