We have a 2001 S40 that never completely clears the rear window of fog. The areas right near the defroster wires get cleared, but not between the wires. I suspected a problem with the feed wires to the rear window, but the service dept checked it and said that all the electrical connections and resistance measurements of the heater wires were ok. I'm not real happy with this situation and need toknow if anyone has seen this problem on the S40. Thanks in advance!

Does your defroster stay on, or does it automatically switch itself off? My S40 defroster stays on (unless I manually switch it off) and clears the window fully. In my previous car (non-Volvo) I had the problem you describe, but due to the defroster switching itself off too soon. From other posting here, the X40 defroster should not switch itself off. The 2000 owner's manual describes that it will though. It's possible they changed it for the 2001 model.

My defroster does stay on, though the dealer told me there was a misprint in the 2001 manual.

I have a 2000 S40 and the defroster light stays on until it is pressed a second time. However, I noticed while I was driving snow and ice began to form again on the rear window. I turned it off, then back on again and it began to clear the window again. I think despite the light begining lit, the defroster does shut down after about 10-15 mins. Therefore, turning it off then on again reactivates it and will clear the entire window. You shouldn't have to do that, but from my experience it seems to be the case.
