1998 front wheel bearing replacement torque V70-XC70

Hi Everyone,

This weekend I tackled the replacement of my left front wheel bearing....man was that thing worn out; two weeks ago it seemed fine then on one 150 mile trip is started screaming at me--when i jacked it up, the movement in the wheel was incredible.

Anyhow, I successfully replaced it with a new aftermarket hub, new bolts and new caliper bolts too. Not owning an angle torque meter, i torqued them up to specs then added a tad. [really scientific measurement, i know]. As these are torque to yield fastners, do you guys think i should purchase another new set of bolts and a torque angle meter and re-do or just move on?

Just replaced the wheel bearing hubs in my wife's 1999 V70 yesterday, along with the struts, lower control arms, sway bar links, and outer tie rod ends. Car should ride like it just came off the dealer floor.

Anyway, I torqued the new bolts to what was recommeded, then eye balled the 60 degrees. Since I had the steering knuckle out of the car, it was easy to replace the bearing hubs with the knukle in a vice. I do have an angle meter, but it is a PITA to use with such an irregular hunk of metal (steering knuckle). Eye balling 60 is not too hard, figure 2/3 of a right angle gives you 60 degrees.

I don't know which bolt(s) you are refering to. To tighten to a specific angle, just look at an analog clock. Every 5 minutes = 30 degrees, so if you need to do 60 degrees, that is the same as moving your wrench handle 10 minutes on a clock face.

In most cases, move on, because you are close enough.

      Thanks Klaus,

I was referring to the e14 headed bolts that hold the bearing carrier to the steering knuckle. I torqued them evenly up the 33lb-ft then estimated another 60degrees just like you were referring to but due to the convoluted position of the knuckle a torque anlge meter would have been very helpful. anyhow, probably close enough and my Alfa is screaming for a new diff so i guess i will move on.

      Thanks

I have yet to see a technician actually torque those bolts down. Run them down with a 1/2" gun, torque them evenly with the gun in an "X" pattern and be done with it.
