Front bumper cover, 1996 850 wagon 850 1996

Hello all,
I just picked up a 1996 850 turbo wagon and the front top of the bumper cover is torn( p/o hit a trailer hitch ??)Is just the grey part removable or do I need to remove the whole assembly. I have a 1994 parts car with a good front bumper I can use.
Thanks, philvo

When you do the bumper job, get the Volvo, plastic covered rivets - they are cheaper if you buy a bag full - a dozen or twenty I think.

When you go to rivet the cover to the wheel well, put 8 penny nails in all the holes to make sure they all line up before you put in any rivets. Then rivet the hardest one first.

I have done this job at least three times, and it is worth your time to line everything up first before you use rivets.

BTW check the fasteners that hold the inner fender in place before you start. They push on - you can replace them with the bottom of a clear plastic iced coffee cup, or a hunk of a Dawn bottle with a small hole punched in it.

If the inner fender is loose, the bumper can sag - you don't want to rivet it that way.

Look very closely at both cars' bumpers. You can tell if they are in one piece or two. The top piece is the bumper cover, the bottom is called the bumper.

Some after market replacement bumpers and covers are one piece,

Our '95 855 base had such a cover as it had been in a small accident before we bought it.

Then we hit a raccoon at 70 MPH. The break in the bumper extended up into the cover.

For the cost of the insurance settlement I was able to buy a new R model bumper and install it unpainted.

The plastic is black and it does not show all the scratches that it has suffered at the hands of my wife.

BTW, a new bumper and cover in their boxes will not fit in a 850 wagon.

The R model bumper is not lower than a base bumper, but it does stick out further and is easy to scrape on curbs.

Yes, the top and bottom come apart, but not like you would design it:

Practice on your donor car, the entire bumper cover must come off in order to separate the pieces.
