V70 R rear wing question.

I was wondeirng what a good price for a 98 Wagon wing. I saw that the painted wing in IPD was $350. Is this a good price or can one do better at a dealership or at another location? Plus I'm assuming its a glue on assembly to the car?

Thanks,

Bill in Denver

awaiting the arrival of my 98 AWD R

    Re: V70 R rear wing question. V70-XC70 1998

I picked up my wing from Brentwood Volvo here in St. Louis. (www.brentwoodvolvo.com or 314 644-9501). Put me back $138.00 (unpainted). B.V. advertises nationally in magazines.

Installation was a breeze. Follow the instruction carefully that are provided, use the right tools, and you will have a clean installation. Takes 1/2 hour or so.

I checked with IPD and they could not match price from B.V. Told me to buy from B.V., so I did.

    Looks great!!

    Sascha

Re: V70 R rear wing question.

I think that's pretty close to the price you'll pay from the dealership. As far as I can tell, the best (cheapest) place to buy one online is www.volvoworld.com. If my memory serves me right, it's about $160US including shipping. I've never purchased anything from them - I'm actually waiting for more information on the spoiler but he hasn't returned our messages (which is a bit of a concern as it's now been a few weeks).

Not quite sure how it installs (hopefully someone else can answer that) but you don't need to drill holes - I'm guessing that it attaches to the hinges on the rear gate.

    Hope this helps.

    Mike

I got mine from www.volvoworld.com. It was delivered in 2 days. I was getting some work done at the body shop and they painted and installed it for free. Installation looked quite straight forward. It just bolts on.

Re: V70 R rear wing question.

I got my wagon wing from my dealer at their annual garage sale i.e. 20% or more off of everything. I think I paid about $150 Canadian plus taxes (15%) for an OEM Volvo wagon spoiler. Since I know the guys at the shop really well, I got a 40% discount on the spoiler, instead of just 20%. And I paid about $75 bucks to have it painted at a local shop that I have had other work done. So I paid a total of $225 Canadian for it. iPd is comprehensive in their parts and service, but many agree, they are over priced.

As for installation, NO IT IS NOT GLUED ON!!! There is an adhesive patch used, but is more for preventing the spoiler from vibrating against the glass, then it is for support. You will have to do some modifications to the plastic panelling on the hatch. This requires a hacksaw or something similar to cut the plastic. Then. a series of metal supports are bolted to the hinges of the rear hatch. PAY ATTENTION HERE! Since the screws you will be removing support the door, you must follow the direction to prevent damaging the hinge you are not working on. You don't want two screws on one hinge holding up the entire weight of the hatch! Then put the adhesive pads on the spoiler, and allign, thread the bolts from the support to the spoiler, and then apply pressure to the spoiler so that the adhesive makes good contact. Do not get it wet for about 48 hours or so.

If you want better directions or have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Re: V70 R rear wing question.

      Hi Sin,

thanks for the info. If it's not too much trouble, I'd love to get more detailed directions on exactly what has to be done to install the spoiler - I had assumed it was pretty much just bolt-on.

      Let us know. Thanks

      Mike

Re: V70 R rear wing question.

Lay out the parts in a way that you won't lose anything. You will need some VERY good penetrating oil, a torx driver set, some extra alcohol is good, some degreaser, and whatever you use to wax your car.

I recommend waxing the spoiler first. Make sure the paint has cured long enough. Depending on where you get it painter, they can say anything from a week, to a couple weeks. It just makes things easier. It's easier to wax the spoiler off then on.

You will have to remove the plastic panels on the hatch and make the necessary cuts to remove enough plastic to allow the supports through.

Spray the penetrating oil on the screws. Depending on the age of your car, and the weather in your area, they could be very rusted. It helps to get a torx driver with a screwdriver handle. If very stubborn, allign the torx driver with teh screw, and tap with a hammer. This just helps to break the screw away from the corrosion. Be VERY careful to not round the screw heads.

Remove one screw and ONLY one screw. It shouldn't make that much of difference, but I believe it's the one closer to the front of the car when the door is fully open. Then replace it with the longer screw in the kit.

Then place the metal plate so that when you thread a nut to the back of the longer bolt supplied with the kit, it'll hold the plate in place. Tighten hand tight (don't over tighten yet).

Remove the other nut. Replace with the longer nut and bolt to the plate on the back.

Now thouroughly degrease the part of the hinge that will be covered by the support for the spoiler with degreaser and alcohol. Wait to dry.

Apply clear adhesive plastic sheet so that the plate and screws are covered.

Bolt the support to the longer bolts you just put in.

        Repeat on the other side.

Do a test fitting of the spoiler. Notice the metal threads in the spoiler for mounting. The support has elongated holes so minor adjustments can be made.

Thouroughly clean the glass where spoiler meets it with degreaser and alcohol and the spoiler where the adhesive will be applied. This padded adhesive patch is primarily to prevent the spoiler from bouncing and vibrating on the glass, NOT for support! Wait to dry.

Apply the adhesive strip to the spoiler. This is where two people come in handy. You must try to lower the spoiler so that spoiler meets the supports as intended while not allowing the adhesive patches to stick before everything is alligned. It helps to try to allign the spoiler's metal thread inserts with the supports cut outs.

Apply some pressure to the spoiler to create good contact. Tighten down the nuts.

Important notes! Try to be careful with the penetrating oil and degreaser. They are pretty horrible to paint. Clean them up quickly and as you work. Wax every part of the car that got contaminated. If required, clean the windows of penetrating oil with degreaser and alcohol.

The entire job takes about 1-2 hours depending on how difficult the bolts are. Two of the four bolts on my hinges were so correded, the best penetrating oils weren't enough. I had to use a torx with a screwdriver handle and a hammer to tap them free. If you don't have a problem with the bolts, you could be done in an 1 flat. But with clean up, everything should be done between 1-2 hours.

IF you have anymore questions, feel free to ask.

          One more thing

Don't get it wet for about 48 hours afterwards. I think it's to do with the adhesive.

            Re: One more thing

            Hey Sin,

thanks for the great instructions - it doesn't sound like it's too bad but I think I'll check to see how much I can get the dealer to do it for. I don't know if I trust myself to not screw something up and it would be annoying to have it mis-aligned, rattling, smearing adhesive and/or screw up my paint.

            much appreciated,

            Mike

              Re: One more thing

Mis-allignment can occur if you don't get the spoiler down square the first time. Which is kinda tough to do with one person. I had my dad help me out with mine. As for rattling, as long as you press the adhesive down well after alligning it, I wouldn't worry about it. As for the adhesive, it is a pad with adhesive on both sides, so it won't run. And as long as you don't let your tools near the spoiler, and only lay it down on the carpeted trunk or the clean cardboard box it came in or slip the screwdriver when tightening the spoiler to the supports, you shouldn't scratch it.

Have faith in yourself. As long as you have a second pair of hands for the adhesive part, as long as you follow the directions I gave you and that the spoiler kinda comes with (has very little written instructions, diagrams don't match parts provided, but gives you an idea), and be careful of not stripping the torx bolts, you should be fine.

                Re: One more thing

Thanks for the extra info - I'll be doing it with my buddy (we each have a V70 and we'll both be getting one) so I guess we should be ok.

My only problem now is the 48hr thing - my wife uses the car pretty much every day for work and with snow, it might not be possible not to get it wet for 2 days.

                thanks again,

                Mike

Well, it says no machine wash for 48hours. But I wouldn't take the chance. And I believe the patch is only good between certain temperatures. I think it has to be atleast 12 degrees Celcius for the adhesive patch to work properly.

                    Re: One more thing

That's good to know - it probably won't be 12C for at least another month or two here (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) so I guess I'll have to wait.

                    Thanks again,

                    Mike

Is your garage heated? If it is heated enough, and you are willing to leave it there for 48 hours, that should work. But I agree with you. It might be a better idea to wait till it warms up.

I bought the painted rear wing from IPD. Genuine Volvo part and the paint matched perfectly. Follow the instructions and it bolts on perfectly. Yeah, it's kinda expensive but it looks very cool.

        Hi Ron,

what are the instructions to install the one from IPD? Is it the same installation as the OEM?

        Let us know,

The instructions are from Volvo. They are OEM instructions and they work perfectly. Its a straightforward bolt on affair. The wing from IPD is a factory Volvo part. Nice paint from IPD too. Mine is red.
