Turbo Failure 850

I'm wondering, what are the symptoms of a bad or aging turbo unit? I'm getting thick blue exhaust when I slow down or turn. Also an oil leak dripped in a straight line a little over a foot long, couple inches wide, coming out from near the radiator. Plugs aren't fouling and power seems OK. The engine has somewhere near 200K miles on it but runs strong.

Also check the engine oil cooler lines to the radiator, right side. The hoses do deteriorate where connecting to the metal lines.

Let me see... the turbo is between the block and the firewall. The MASSIVE oil leak is in front of the block. Why are you suspecting the turbo?

Find out where the oil is leaking from! Remove the air guide and take a look up. You can drive for a long time without the air guide, which may be collecting oil and letting it run down on the driver's side.

If the oil is all coming from the weep hole in the intercooler, you should be at least a quart low by now. Check the level. Pull the bottom hose off the intercooler and see if it is full of oil. Make sure the clamp is tight when you put the hose back on.

When the turbo oil seal leaks massive amounts of oil, the turbo can still be repaired - so long as the vanes of the turbo do not wobble.

My wife drives a 2005 S80 2.5 turbo with about 110,000 miles on it. For some time now I have suspected the turbo has an internal oil leak. When you sit idling or pull into the garage, the car smells kinda "hot-oilish". Also, it appears to have some seepage out of where the turbo hose connects to the turbo. The commonly suspected chrome oil line connection looks dry.

Are there cartridge kits or seals available for these things, or are they throw away turbos? Parts sources? Thanks in advance.

I don't have a supplier list, but the seal kits are available for $100-150. Removing the turbo is a bear because of the rusty exhaust bolts and location.

Check out this thread:

Same applies to the older 850's.

There are other threads, including a UK site that has pics on how to do the rebuild.

Klaus,

Thanks for the lead. I found some other posts also, including a videoor two on Youtube. I may crawl under there tomorrow and try to disconnect the outlet hose just to see how much oil it is really passing.

I like my non-turbo wagon....

If you decide to rebuild your turbo, make sure you buy an OEM (spelled M I T S U B I S H I) kit and use new OEM (spelled V O L V O) seals and gaskets.

Good luck!
Greg

Where would I source the real McCoy parts? Everything I see online is most likely Chinese knock offs.
