Loose Dashboard 850 1995

Working on the glovebox I noticed that the entire passenger end of my dashboard is loose. Not just the pad, but the entire assembly. With the door open I can reach under the dash and move it up and down about 3/4".

How is it secured? (ok, how WAS it secured?) About 8 years ago I replaced the HVAC blower motor so I've been into it that far comfortably.

What am I facing in terms of a project and time?

Thanks,

Erwin

    Erwin,

    It's a major project.

You need to remove the entire dash and remold the 4 tabs. It is also probable that years of shaking will have broken other parts of the assembly.

I repaired mine with a product called PlastiMend. It is basically MEK + ABS. This dissolves some of the base plastic and adds another layer. Some people use metal strips screwed into the plastic to reinforce the tabs.

Anyway, here is the MOST IMPORTANT thing to do to prevent it from happening again: Place rubber padding on the firewall under the felt. The factory felt compresses over time and its shock absorbing ability is nil. I used the stuff that you put between a truck bed and camper top. It's thin & very high density.

Like Klaus says Matthew's Volvo site has a great write-up.

      Thanks, both of you.

Yes, it looks like a major project. One I don't have time for yet. I did find that the screw at the kick panel, just at the door opening, was very loose and tightened it. I know it's not going to hold long-term and that the mounts need to be rebuild.

With two cars needed daily, this will have to be planned for.

I'll start another thread about the glove box lid, which I found hanging on by vinyl.

First, check the bolt on the bottom right of the dash on the passenger side. Then search on dashboard over on Volvospeed & matthews- they have pics.
