As far as the battery drain goes, have her pull the fuse for the interior lights and see if that stops it. If you'll see the car once school's out, I bet she can live without those lights for a few weeks. Anyhow....
C'ville Imports is run by good guys and is a fairly inexpensive indy shop, but they're not afraid to occasionally screw something up. I think they could troubleshoot a battery drain without breaking anything else. They're also walkable from the university. Edgecombs is also good people, and they're more reliable but definitely more expensive. They're sure to get it right, but it will cost you. Some people swear by Cole's Import Specialist, but I don't know them personally so I can't really say much about them. They're a BMW/Saab/Benz/VW/Volvo type of place. C'ville Imports and Edgecombs are more Volvo specialists.
If she doesn't mind driving to Waynesboro (about 25 minutes west of Charlottesville), there is a TRULY excellent one man indy shop there. Brian Garrett, of Garrett's Automotive/Volvos and More. He doesn't have a website, though you can google his contact info. Might be a bit of a struggle to get a loaner car from him (small operation, kind of depends on what he's got laying around the lot), but like I said he's truly excellent. Just a great guy who does great work and loves his Volvos. He'll get it right and he'll take it easy on your wallet.
I'm 15 minutes from UVA. I'd be happy to take a look at it, but my schedule is pretty crazy with travel for the next month or so. Feel free to email me though and maybe it'd work out.
Best,
Afton
