Reliable Shop in Charlottesville VA Area? 850

Looking for recommendations on reliable Volvo mechanics in the Charlottesville VA area for a child away at school. Any recommendations of places to avoid likewise appreciated.

Car is a 96 850 and issue is some sort of battery drain (alternator is working).

Don't want the kid to get taken for a ride.....

As far as the battery drain goes, have her pull the fuse for the interior lights and see if that stops it. If you'll see the car once school's out, I bet she can live without those lights for a few weeks. Anyhow....

C'ville Imports is run by good guys and is a fairly inexpensive indy shop, but they're not afraid to occasionally screw something up. I think they could troubleshoot a battery drain without breaking anything else. They're also walkable from the university. Edgecombs is also good people, and they're more reliable but definitely more expensive. They're sure to get it right, but it will cost you. Some people swear by Cole's Import Specialist, but I don't know them personally so I can't really say much about them. They're a BMW/Saab/Benz/VW/Volvo type of place. C'ville Imports and Edgecombs are more Volvo specialists.

If she doesn't mind driving to Waynesboro (about 25 minutes west of Charlottesville), there is a TRULY excellent one man indy shop there. Brian Garrett, of Garrett's Automotive/Volvos and More. He doesn't have a website, though you can google his contact info. Might be a bit of a struggle to get a loaner car from him (small operation, kind of depends on what he's got laying around the lot), but like I said he's truly excellent. Just a great guy who does great work and loves his Volvos. He'll get it right and he'll take it easy on your wallet.

I'm 15 minutes from UVA. I'd be happy to take a look at it, but my schedule is pretty crazy with travel for the next month or so. Feel free to email me though and maybe it'd work out.

    Best,
    Afton

The glovebox light is probably a good bet. Several years ago my wife`s 95 850 had that problem & I couldn`t figure it until one night I went to get something out of the car & saw the glovebox light on. Mystery solved!

There are 2 in the area listed in 'SHOPS':

But first, have your daughter sit in the car at night with the key out and the interior dark. See if there is any light coming from around the glove box. Also have her pull down the center rear armrest and open the pass through and check for the trunk light being on.

After packing the trunk to the max, it is easy to trip the light switch in the trunk to be always on. Been there, done that.

If the glove box light is still on, glue a penny to the lid so the contact pushes the plastic pin home better. Or any thick material that will stick to the felt.
