How bad is my transmission? 850 93

Hi,

I have just over 88,000 miles on my 93 850...and I love it.

About two months ago I moved into a house with a very steep and short driveway. I've been gunning it pretty good to get the momentum up. Also, I have backed out a number of times which I now understand is a bad idea for the transmission.

Anyway, the sucker is slipping real bad. I don't know the proper terms for the gears but it slips and shakes for the first gear and second gear. It varies a lot. A mechanic put a half a can of tans additive in and we hoped that it may help. The problem is getting worse. It's now to the point where I do rolling stops when ever possible and vary my route depending on stop lights / traffic so I don't come to a complete stop.

Today, it started to kind of just be suspended in no gear after starting out at a light.

What's the diagnosis doctor? Terminal?

Need advice. I've always gone to the local "dealer" but would prefer to go to an independant...of which I've found three on Oahu. Anybody know a good independant on Oahu?

What kind of repair bill am I looking at.

Thanks,

Dave

Re: How bad is my transmission? 850 93

    Dave,

There are many discussions on the brickboard regarding transmission problems, so looking into the archives may help. I recently had some slipping in mine when engaging into D from N/R/P when warm, and I fixed it with a simple change of transmission fluid. Instructions for doing this are on www.volvospeed.com . From all discussions it seems like the most logical sequence towards fixing transmission problems is as follows:

    1. complete flush of ATF / trans fluid & "ratchet clean" of gear selector (move rapidly between L and P about 20 times with engine off) to clean contacts in PNP ( - gear position selector switch)

    2. check/replace PNP switch

    3. transmission overhaul/replacement

Obviously this varies from (1) being the cheapest to (3) most expensive.

If fluid smells burnt or is not a clean red colour then this may be indicative that it needs replacing.

A lot of tranny shops will tell you that the transmission is shot when it isn't. It may be, but it may be due to fluid or PNP.

    That's my (novice) opinion.

    Good luck
