s tried the "push on the window while holding the switch" action as suggested..no go...now on to test switches I suppose...is there an easy, non trim marring way to remove and test?

I usually found that a wide bladed screwdriver or putty knife worked pretty well. Do the driver's side first. Figure out which wire is hot, which is ground and start testing. 9 out of 10 times it will be a fault in the master switch.

The driver's door is different than the rear seat switches as it has the lock/unlock button.

thanks again Klaus, will try as you suggest....a second question...if the master switch is bad, would that make the passenger side switch not work as well, or are they independent? neither make the front passenger side window go down....

All of the window wiring goes through the master. And the master does fail; rain gets in, oil and dirt from hands, etc. And you are stuck with only 1998-2000 replacements.
