I had a Reese Hitch installed a couple years ago on my '04 XC70. The hitch dealer did not see a wiring kit from his usual sources, but said he could put one together for about $140. This would have included all the wiring, connectors, and power sources. With the newer cars where everything is run by a computer chip, he warned me that just tagging on the trailer lights like in the old days could overload some of the circuits, and get very expensive very fast. (Ever notice that every time you touch the brakes, you can hear relays clicking in the rear fuse/relay panel?) The solution is to have additional power brought in to power the trailer lights. He recommended that I first check with the dealer to see what they had. Turns out my local Volvo crook (I mean dealer) had the kit for about $140, and it simply plugged into the connecter in the spare tire well.
Since I just needed a 4 wire connector for the U-Haul trialer I was renting, there was no need for any software down loads. The dealer indicated that some of the higher level systems, such as for trailer with electric brakes, it may be necessary to down load some software. I'm guessing (purely speculation here) the car is using the acceleratometers from the ABS and Stability Control to regulate the electric brakes on the trailer. Therefore, the computer needs to be setup for that.
