Replacing the oil separator and PCV system 850

What

a

pain

I got about half the stuff off the engine, and couldn't even see the lower left hand (passenger side) bolt. I can't remove what I can't see. So I buttoned it all up again, and will try another day.

Sigh.

"Can't remove what I can't see." What kind of talk is that!! Dude you're on the Brickboard. Just because you can't see it is NO excuse here. You just close your eyes and feel with the ends of your fingers. If that doesn't work I suppose you're out of luck and need a mechanic. Give it another try.....

I will. I'm going to have to remove the power steering pump & thermostat housing though to get to that bolt, and also the fuel lines only disconnect way down behind the engine, not up top. Between the 3 of those operations, I need more time and patience than I had at my disposal yesterday.

I implemented a bandaid solution for the crankcase pressure, I put a tee in the line that runs from the oil separator to the cylinder head, and ran a line to a PCV valve that vents into the intake. So some pressure is being bled off that would otherwise have put the RMS at risk.

Hopefully it will prevent something bad from happening until I can do the job right.

I don't know which bolt you are refering to, but the PS pump and thermostat housing do not get removed! The fuel lines get loosened, there should be a bracket at the top of the cam cover which is easily removed.

There is a bracket holding the intake manifold, its bolt is under the manifold and about 1 inch behind the bolt for the dipstick.

The bottom bolts for the intake manifold just get loosened about 3 turns, you will need a 6 in extension and 'feel' where the bolt head is.

First, have you pulled the dipstick after the engine is good and warm and checked for smoke? If it isn't smoking or smoking lightly then you don't have a serious crankcase pressure problem.

I'm assuming that you have cleaned the existing flame trap and thrown away the screen. Doing that will also help relieve crankcase pressure.

When I bought the car a couple of weeks ago, I had a small amount of oil seepage from the engine and a little smoke from the dipstick hole. I cleaned the flame trap and it almost disappeared -- I wiped the oil pan down then and it isn't oily anymore, and it's no longer spotting the driveway. But I know the oil separator has never been cleaned or replaced, because I have all the records and I can see where the mechanic kept recommending it over and over again (in vain).

I want 5 years out of this vehicle. Replacement of the PCV system is a necessity, I think.
