How many keys can your program for a '99 XC? V70-XC70 1999

Hello All,

I have a 1999 Cross Country. I have the two original master keys and the single valet key (I purchased this car used). I want to get an additional key made by the Volvo dealer (yes I know, they are expensive). My understanding is that the maximum number of keys that you can program for this car is 4. That is you can't program 5 keys simultaneously to be used with this car. My question to all is: Is it true you can only program up to 4 keys for this car?

Thanks to all who respond.

Hugh

I believe that is correct, but verify it by calling the dealer's parts dept. Each key has an embedded chip(transponder) and each chip is unique. The storage memory allows for 4 chips and 4 transponder codes.

User manual also states that only one car key for that car should be on the key chain, to prevent confusion for the security module that is reading multiple transponders. This was solved in later models as the key and remote are one piece.

      Klaus,

Thank you for your reply. I called Volvo Customer Service today (with my VIN #) and confirmed this particular model cannot program more than 4 keys. I also confirmed, because I was a little confused after I read the owner's manual, that when you program the 4th key, you don't have to re-program the other 3 keys.

I wish the key for my '99 XC was as inexpensive (relatively) as the cost of a duplicate key for my 850s.

      Hugh
