Radiator Supports S70 98

Are there known problems with easy breakage of the radiator supports on S70's. Told by a Volve Tech., off the record, it is something they are trying to resolve.

TRUE??

Dealer said hitting front bumper even "ever so slightly" can cause a fracture in the support? He denyed that Volve had a problem with the support??

    Re: Radiator Supports S70 98

Hitting objects lightly with the bumper is not the problem. It's hitting objects with the radiator that causes damage. The mounting ears on the side of the radiator break off or the side tank seperates from the core. Problem is the radiator, intercooler, and A/C condenser hang pretty low on the car. A standard concrete parking lot block can take out a radiator. To my knowledge Volvo is not looking into this as a problem, but then I'm not privy to upper level info. As the design is essentially the same from 92-2000 on all 850, S/V-70 cars and a campaign has not been deemed necessary, I wouldn't expect anything. Just be aware that the radiator and oil pan are among the lowest points on the car and drive accordingly.

Re: Radiator Supports, broken by careless parking S70 98

We see these breaking fairly often but it's highly doubtfull that Volvo's going to "fix" anything with that. I've always felt that it should be noted in the owners manual (in the front, BIG print) about how easily damaged those radiator supports are (right under where it should stress the importance of replacing timing belts at their replacement intervals) BUT neither will happen.

People need to know how volnerable that radiator is to damage and then park the car accordingly, never getting too close to cement stops or snow/ice piles in the winter. If one knows about that, you'ld park accordingly and avoid the problem completely.

I'm also surprized that companies like IPD, who make that oil pan protecting plate didn't think to somehow extend it frontwards to the bottom of the front bumper to also protect the radiator as it's far easier to damage the radiator than it is to damage the oil pan.

The cement stops have always been a problem for my wife. I would like to raise the car an inch or two to prevent an expensive accident.
