Poor ventilation and engine odors in car 850 ALL

Just curious if anyone has a remedy for poor air recirculation and engine bay odors?

Under the hood, where the cabin air filter is located, check if the plastic protector form a good seal at the bottom. If not, air from the engine bay can get in. There is often a gap there due to the fact that you have to bend the plastic to takes in and out the cabin air filter and it does not make a good seal.

Here is my solution. Takes a big paper clip (the one that clip a big stack of paper) to squezze the black plastic protector against the firewall. That is working for me.

A fairly common problem reported in these threads is the recirc door not working. I have never had his problem but I guess the door comes unhooked from the opening and closing mechanism. That may be part of your problem. Hopefully, others who have fixed this will post.

Re: Poor ventilation and engine odors in car 850 ALL

I can flip the recirc button and it will flip the door. Only problem is it can get steamy and nasty in a car with the recirc door closed all the time. Even with the AC on. (My parents always have theirs closed and AC on and the car always has some sort of odor to it. Not body odor, just moldy mildew type odors)

I have several other cars that I can run with the "fresh air vent" open and not get the engine bay smell inside. I do not have a pollen filter installed, found this when looking for source of odor. I just have never had a car that has pulled air in from the engine bay before, at least that I could smell.

Maybe unrelated or not, when accelerating under boost, I can hear air behind the dash. Even with the ECC off, there is loud air when in boost. Now what died?

Help, please...

I notice that also from time to time..seems most prevalent when you have the heat on. do nto notice as much when just have the vent on with no heat.

Re: Poor ventilation and engine odors in car 850 ALL

The moldy smell is probably condensation in your a/c system. The moisture allows mold to grow in the system. I used a product that I purchased in the local auto parts store I think it was called FreshAir or CleanAir. I sprayed it into the a/c air intake vents while the a/c is on. It pretty much cleared up the smell. I heard that you run the vent on without the a/c for a few seconds before turning off the engine should clear the cool air in the system and therefore no condensation in the system.
