I wonder!.. I must be crazy! S40-V40 2001

Hi guys!

Hey, I have had 3 T4's,-... 2 (Phase I and onone PhaseII.) Now I wonder.

If I know where all the rattles, and noises are, and they have been in all three of my cars (1998/1999/2001.) Am I a good mechanic? Are the Swedes/Dutch asleep? DO I like taking my car apart over weekends when other people have fun? Is there a production problem or am I just unlucky.

( Oh yes, or is it the South African weather?)

Now I also wonder...! Why am I such an enthusiast, why do I keep defending the product, and remember there is Audi and BMW...

OK, I must be crazy! Cause I'll defenately buy one again.

I was just wondering today.

Regards

Michél

Hi. Michel if you sorted out some of the rattles and noises how about sharing. I know this might take some time in posting all the solutions etc. Please as I would also like to drive a rattle free Volvo T4.

If any other person knows the solution to a "rattle" please post it!!!

    Thanks.

    Pieter

      Re: I wonder!.. I must be crazy! S40-V40 2000

      Hi Pieter

      1. OK, Here goes. Just a few to start off with! If you hear a buzzing sound from your centre console, round about 4000 RPM, get a doctors syringe, and buy a can of Motorbike chain lube. Spray some into a container, and then pour it into the syringe. On the engine side, find the two gear selection cables and insert the needle into the rubber boot. Spray about 100/150 c.c. of the fluid into the cable. It will penetrate into the cable over a day or two, and the buzzing sound will go away. Please note that you have to inject the fluid over an hour or two to give it time to run down the cable casing. It works like a charm.

      2. If your sunroof makes a noise, put a thin coat of door lube along the roof edge where the two meet.

      3. For buzzing sounds in both front doors, the little clips that clips the panels onto the doors, normally buz. Remove them, and before replacing, use presstick to secure.

      4. If you go round a corner and you hear a bang in the rear suspension, Replace the roll bar bushes, or insert a gasket between the U-bracet and the frame it clips into.

      5. If you get a buzzing sound from your centre console, remove the indicator housing and you will find there is a plate with one clip in the bottom plastic cover. Remove and insert a few foam or rubber strips between the plate and cover.

      6. If your front windows creak, go to your dealer and let them retighten the whole glass section..

7.If you go over a bump and it sounds as if you have a loose spanner in the boot, adjust the boot rubbers a few turns out.

      8. Hey, if you keep loosing centre badges (wheels), epoxy them in. It does not only happen to Volvo's you know. I am still convinced they don't fall out, but get taken out by people that collect them!

      9. If you have a click in your steering, it is the 2/10ths of a millimeter play in the spliance of the bottom section of the steering colmn. Take a bit of super glue or lock tight and pour it in between the top section of the steering colmn and the bottom one. I see Volvo does the same with the PHASE II model.

      etc. etc.

Hey, like I said. I must be MAD! But like I said, I'll buy one again... There are alot of fun things about the car once you sort the small things out.

      Regards

      Michel

PS! For anybody wanting to passing snotty remarks for the way I fix my car, Please note that these remedies all work! At least I try! AND I don't run to my dealer for everything.I have an engineering background, and know that the simple things sometimes work!

      Re: I wonder!.. I must be crazy! S40-V40 2000

One of the rattles I easily fixed was the baby seat harness covers on the rear deck. All I did was use the soft side of Velcro (not the hooks, the other mating type) and stuck it on the inside of the cover so that it was pressed firmly on the baby seat harness and it wouldn't rattle. Another rattle I have yet to fix is in my control panel on the drivers side door, for some reason or other it rattles, my fix will eventually be foam meshed in between the panel and the door.

    Re: I wonder!.. I must be crazy! S40-V40 2001

    Michel,

So you spend your offtime taking your S40 apart to huh?? We need to talk!! I just spent this past weekend routing cables for the soon to be installed subwoofer system. (and while out to lunch today I had a most wicked idea on how to disable the power antenna and install a new one without having to install a secondary antenna on the outside of the vehicle (of course I have a theory on how to do it) but anyway, I too have "debugged" some of the minor rattles in my S40 and am surprised that Volvo has allowed some of these to go on. Some of the fixes are so simple it's not even funny to wonder why Volvo hasn't done something about it. Oh well, you're not the only one that's crazy but I have my eyes on a new love machine... an Infiniti G20!! So many cars, so little money!!!

    Carlos!

      An..Infiniti G20???? YUK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just don't waste your $$$, Carlos. I have spent numerous weekends driving G20s, as late as MY2000....what a loser of a car? Have you ever wondered why it has NEVER caught on in the US??? Because it is too much $$$ for a little Nissan Primera...

I like their slogan.."engineered in Japan, educated in Europe"...sure...perhaps Albania kand Serbia...had the Yugo as a classmate...

I know Yannis, but the damn car looks so good!!! LOL!!

I know i'll never get it as my next vehicle will be either an S60, a 1995 Yellow T-5R wagon, or an Audi A4 Quattro. Either way it'll be at least 5 years before my next vehicle! Unless I win the lottery!!!

        Carlos
