Volco s60 idle and stalling issues. S60 2001

I recently purchased a 2001 s60 t5 with a 5speed manual transmission. I recently noticed the car idling funny (revving between 500 and 1000 RPm's) Soon afterwards, the car died on a steep hill and would not start.

After about 20 minutes, I got it started again but it was still not idling correctly and the check engine light was on. I barely drove the car to a garage (kept stalling) and I had them read the error codes which were:

P0335: Crankshaft position sensor A circuit.
P0121: Throttle/Pedal position sensor/switch A circuit range/performance
p1238: cyl2-fueling circ. open circ.

After reading the codes and resetting the computer, the car was back to normal and drove perfectly.

I am not sure what the problem is or how to approach it.

Thanks

I would bet the P0121 is your main problem. Electronic throttle is messing up. Buy a decent code reader and keep it in the glove box.
The CPS will not cause the car to stall, but it will cause a no start. The CPS is not hard or expensive to replace.

Thank you for your response. I live in an area with no certified Volvo mechanics. So, I really appreciate any help.

I have ordered a code reader to keep in my glove box and will replace the CPS. In your opinion, what course of action should I take to take care of the throttle issue? If I continue to reset the code, will that take care of it? I read that the s60's have had issues with the ETM. Should I replace that as well?

      Thanks again

You should have the upgraded ETM, yellow sticker, in the 2001. If you can verify that the ETM is at fault, I suggest looking at www.xemodex.com for better than OEM fix. A replacement ETM(OEM) must be done at a dealership because the software must then be upgraded to accept the new ETM - at considerable cost to you.

I don't know how to trouble shoot a throttle position sensor, if that is the problem.

I took your advice and got a code reader. This morning the check engine light came on again. However, this time it was a different code:

          P0305: misfire in cylinder 5.

Is it possible that all of these codes are inter-related through a common problem?

A misfire is not related to the above. That could be a simple spark plug gap or a bad coil on #5. I suggest moving the coil to another cylinder and see if the code then follows the coil, if so, replace the defective coil.
