Swapping a cooler thermostat (turbo) 850 97

Hi there,

Are there any benefits or downsides of swapping to a cooler thermostat? If so, what is the optimum thermostat rating? I live in Singapore which is about 30C or about 90F year round.

Thanks!!

    Brandon-

In the USA the only thermostat available for the 850 is a 90 degree C. Everything in the engine (clearances, fuel and ignition curves, ect.) are based on this operating temperature.

      Dave,

Would a faulty thermostat possibly cause premature turbo failure? I just recently noticed my car not warming up and have recently started having some turbo pains!

      Thanks,

      John

Unless the OEM thermostat fails in the closed position, there should be no way for it to harm the turbo.

If you car is taking a long time to warm up, it's because it failed in the open position, which all OEM 850 Tstats do. If the environment is cold and you are driving at highway speeds, it won't even come close to operating temperature.

You probably do have a failed tstat. It's actually very easy to replace. It's mounted on the very front passenger side of the engine block. It is actually screwed to the block. There's a little bit of a mess when changing it, if your car isn't entirely cold. If totally cold, it should be a quick change.

As for your turbo, are you sure it's the turbo, or just a decrease in performance? Your failed tstat could be keeping operating temps so low that you aren't getting 100% from the engine. Or you could have a host of other problems preventing the engine from operating at its peak.

      Dave,

Thank you very much. A few others have also advised me not to swap the stock thermostat for a cooler one.

      Regards

        Brandon,

The OEM thermostat is the best way to fly, keep the factory temp spec and avoid too much trouble.

BTW, I have a few mutual friends from Singapore. Based upon what they were saying, you must have played hell in getting the car into the country. Are you the only guy with a turbo brick in the flat or what? Nice job, good luck with it and have fun.

Actually most model cars are easily available here in Singapore. There are many 850Rs, T5s, M3s, Porsches running in town. However, cars are subjected to heavy taxes over here and you need to bid for a certificate to own that car for 10 yrs. This is to control traffic and vehicle population on our small island.

To give you an idea, an 850R cost about US$135,000 brand new and you had to pay another US$30,000 for the certificate (the price of this cert flactuates according to market demand).

Hope this makes you feel better on owning a car in the US.

          Regards

That makes sense, in a way. My friends were telling me that a Ford Escort was a $40K (US) car in Sing. I laughed at them, and then they explained the system and the 10-year waiting list for driver’s licensees and then the fact you only get to keep it for 10 years your self. Strict, but I can understand. They showed me a family video of Singapore and I died when I saw how clean things were. Also, there were many other things that really impressed me about the country. Nice place! You are fortunate to live there.
