INCONSISTENT IDLING S70

Hello all,

I have a 1998 S70 GLT.

Two days ago, I noticed that when I started the car the idling went up and slowly go down -- about two to three times this happened (as if someone slightly stepped on the gas pedal and then let go slowly). The car ran fine that day.

Today, I start the car and the idling was fine for a minute or two and then the idling goes up and down once or twice then the car dies. I started it three times and the same thing, idling goes down until the engine stops.

I started the car a fourth time and the idling was fine for a few minutes until I turned on the A/C and then the RPM started to go down and suddenly up. No check engine light.

I don't feel comfortable driving it. Any ideas, suggestions, comments?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I just had the 90k mile service done last month (LOF Synthetic, cabin & air filters, new plugs, antifreeze; inspected battery, drive belt, A/T fluid, etc)

Do the easy, cheap things first. Remove the idle air control motor and soak it out with throttle body cleaner. Shake it around until it sounds like it is starting to fall apart inside. Pour out the dirty and black cleaner and remount.

Then clean the throttle body. Just take off the intake hose and spray cleaner on the butterfly valve and remove all of the brown/black gook. Make sure you open the butterfly and clean the back side.

Then look around for vacuum leaks, the hoses are all 14 years old.

Last, suspect the MAF. It costs money to replace.

Thanks, Klaus. You mentioned hoses, which reminded me that every time I fill-up with gas the day before (almost full or full), I could smell a strong gas scent when I enter our garage the next morning. I've noticed this for the past 3+ months but ignored it because of no symptoms, CEL, etc. Could this be related?

Gasoline odors are usually associated with a split hose in the EVAP system - routing the fumes to the charcoal cannister. When you get a chance, fill up the tank, drive home and start sniffing for fumes. Concentrate on the right rear wheel well area.

Well I was going to fill the tank with gas this morning but the engine died after after about 30 seconds. Now the car won't start -- the starter would crank but engine won't start. No codes.

Engine now runs for about a minute then dies S70

P.S. I got it to start again but the car died after a minute. RPM, by the way, was consistent during that time and then went down until engine died.

BTW, what's that faint hum I hear right after the engine stops? It lasts for about a minute then turns off. It's coming from the area close to the MAF/air filter (FYI: this is an LPT engine)

Humm: if the key is still turned to on, it could be the cold air pump by the left front wheel. The idle air control is always in when the key is in posII.

I suggest pulling one of your spark plugs and seeing if it is fouled with gasoline. Check the gap = .028. What kind of plugs did you put in? Copper are the best.

                UPDATE S70

Thanks for all the input, Klaus.

I had the car towed yesterday to Vol-Tech in Austin and they just informed me that it was the fuel pump.

try cleaning your MAF and your throttle body (Idle air motor too if you want). When my MAF went, the RPMs slowly crept up without touching the gas.

Thanks! I tried first to re-seat the MAF plug and so far the car starts fine. I will check and try starting it again in the morning.
