Early and late tensioner setups S70 1998

Next project on my daughter's 98 S70 NA is belts, tensioner etc. In fact we are going to do the water pump this time around too. Did this at 99k, and I seem to recall it's the earlier, cylinder tensioner, but my notes don't say. Unfortunately the serial number on the front cover is badly weathered so I can't tell from that. Is there anything in the VIN that will tip me off? I guess I can take the front cover off, but thought maybe production date/VIN might help me.

Thanks, white block fans,
DS

Early and late tensioner setups S70 1998

The hydraulic tensioner usually lasts well beyond 200K miles. The Tbelt change interval is 70K miles. If you use good antifreeze and flush it ocassionally, the water pump lasts around 200K. The tensioner rollers should be replaced with the belt.

Yes, cars built late in 1998 used the new mechanical tensioner, and those tensioners get replaced with the belt change.

It is easiest to remove the cover and take a look at the tensioner. One 10mm bolt, but putting the cover back on properly does take a little finesse.

Thanks gents. Yes, it seems I'm bound to pull the cover. Just to make you chuckle: In researching info on old cars, I've often been amazed at just how responsive and helpful the folks at Volvo USA can be. I get prompt replies to inquires about port of entry and mfg. date on 240s. Late yesterday I sent them a message saying, that I'm trying to determine which tensioner/belt setup I have in absence of the engine serial sticker. Can the engine serial number be determined from the VIN number on S70 #...etc etc. Got the response this morning. "If you can provide us with the engine serial number, we can tell you which parts apply".

Oh well. Now I just need to get the child to sit still long enough during daylight hours--er, normal hours--to pull the cover and check. Ah to be 22.

        Engine serial number S70 1998

The hard way to get the engine serial number is to use a mirror. It is stamped on the firewall side at the top of the block, forward/passenger side. A bit harder to read, especially in mirror image, but it is there.

My almost 24 year old drives only when she has to. I think her car has been out of the garage twice since Christmas. I am going to plug in a battery charger just to make sure it is startable. Her car gets less use than my 220, which only runs on clear, dry days.

          Engine serial number S70 1998

This one is just the opposite. Aside from work, on the go constantly. I finally just sent a message to Volvo and they confirmed it's an early engine.
