Happy New Year all...happy owner of a '98 S70 NA...do as much of my own work as possible, given what shops charge per hour...have a chance to jump on a '98 GLT in need of a head gasket, $1000 OBO, seems pretty clean in online posted pics, with lots of new parts recently installed, 200k on the odo tho'....I'm a decent shade tree mechanic, but never r'n'rd a head before...how tough a job is this? thinking of flipping car, if I can turn a few dollars... all input is sought and very much appreciated...

Ditto to RepairmanJack. It is not a fun job, it will take 3-7 days, and you will need a Haynes 850 manual that explains how to do it.

If you do it for the learning process, good for you. If you just want to flip the car, it is not cheap and blood loss is expected. Check the sticker for the timing belt, you might want to change the belt and a couple of rollers while you are at it.

RepairmanJack had a few complications, the plastic above the cams was missing, so there were no good timing marks. The exhaust bolts came out of the head. And you will need to buy new head bolts - lots of them (OEM only).

Oh, and a good camera to remember where everything used to be.

A case of beer for emergency use only!

it's a bit of an undertaking and will require a few special tools to do it right. I did this to save my 1998 C70 back in September.

The tricky part is that you need to have a pretty good array of replacement parts on hand as things will break and things will need to be replaced after you've messed with them a bit.

It's a labor of love. I wouldn't recommend doing it for a car if you're just going to try and sell it.
