'03 V70 Wagon Stalls Frequently V70-XC70 2003

We have a '03 V70 5-spd n/a wagon that's stalling frequently leaving us stranded on the side of the road. I understand from searching the postings here and thru other forums that this is a "common" problem however I've not found a "common" solution (mentioned are faulty MAF, ETM, CEM, etc.).

I'm the second owner; first owner was very diligent on keeping maintenance records. After looking thru I found that this wagon had a history with this issue (stalling) and what had been done to correct it. Here's the list of repairs done (relative to stalling, all other scheduled maint. performed on time and by Volvo dealer with the exception of the last MAF replacement):

MAF sensor replaced under warranty – 936mi
MAF sensor replaced under warranty – 25k mi
Fuel Pump replaced under warranty– 25k mi
C/S download software upgrade for MAP sensor under warranty- 102k mi
Fuel pressure regulator, fuel pressure sensor recall, rep. under warranty– 102k
02 sensor (heated) replaced - 175k
MAF sensor replaced – 204k (2mo ago!!)

I've pulled two codes with the OBDII scanner; P0101/Mass Air Flow sensor range-performance & P0106/Barometric Sensor range-performance. As of now the wagon sits in the garage awaiting tow to the repair shop after the holidays for further diagnosis. With so much history on this wagon with the same issue I’m a bit baffled it continues to stall, any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated!

-Guillermo

Check the repair slip and see if you have the correct MAF. I believe the part # is 30713512. Denso makes it for Volvo.

The other fault is for the barometric sensor, if it fails then the engine defaults to sea level and you may be running super rich. At higher altitudes, the engine may just flood out. That will contribute to the ECM confusion of how to regulate the MAF.

The MAF is the correct one. I've gone back and checked the codes, now in addition to P0101 (MAF) and P0106 (MAP/BP sensor range/perf.) I found P2227 (BP circuit range/performance) which happens to be relative to P0106. I've read that a potential symptom when these codes show is no iddle...which is where I am @ the moment...should I replace the BP sensor? In some places it seems as if the MAP and the BP sensors are the same (or one) for our V70. Just wondering if this will do the trick, it will save me towing fees and repair labor costs.

If the MAP/BP is in fact bad, your spark plugs should be very black or even dripping with gasoline.

The little gizmo isn't cheap, but it is also not repairable. You aren't the only one with a MAP failure, but it is unusual.

Hello, Shot in the dark: Check to see if the fuel filter has been replaced. I know the problem occurred when the car and fuel filter were younger but it's not too long a shot. 22,600+ miles per year and wacky gas markets could deliver several gulps of water to your tank. Kira
