Wine during hard acceleration 850 1994 Turbo

I have a wine audible from outside and inside of my 850 Turbo. The sound is much like that of a harmonica mid-scale C. (Alto) It occurs under Wide-Open Throttle, especially after the Trans kicks down from 2nd to first. The car pulls hard and seems okay, but the sound is strange. The noise only comes in when I am at full throttle and boost. As soon as I lift, the sound stops. Any ideas? I checked most of the hoses, but did not see anything obvious. HELP, she needs a doctor!

Prospero

Re: Wine during hard acceleration 850 1997

I had a similar problem with another turbocharged car (Alpine-Renault GT V6Turbo). It turned out to be the hose which connects the high pressure (output) side of the turbo to the intercooler which was not well fastened. Only under high boost pressure (full throttle) it started leaking and made a trumpet like noise audible inside and outside the car. It happened because some mechanic forgot to tighten things well enough.

Great, that sounds like it makes sense. I'll check some more.

Total longshot: Anything in the intake path (cold air intake

or air box)? A lot of air flows in under full boost and I

imagine if you had something in the path there would be enough

air flow to possibly make it "whistle".

(I've noticed my T5 has more induction noise then exhaust

noise under full throttle but no real whines to speak of.)

Re: Wine during hard acceleration 850 1994 Turbo

I also have a turbo and the car whined loudly, but only in cold weather for almost 30 minutes of driving (Whined louder the harder you pressed). It turned out to be the belt tensioner for the serpentine belt. It was just replaced yesterday and when I started up this morning no loud whining noise. I know this isn't exactly what you described, but it's something to consider.

And JohnB is right, all turbos make that siren type whine noise, I remember when I first started driving the car in 1994, I kept looking for the cops in my rear view!!

    Hope this help

    Scott

      No good!

Please do not drink and drive !

Save the wine for after the acceleration.

      haha

Not red or white? 850 1994 Turbo

I think the sound that you are referring to is the turbo "spooling up". Sort of like the sound of a jet engine starting but played back at 10X the normal speed and quieter. Or better yet, a SCSI drive spinning up from 0-13K RPM. I know about this sound...

The sound I hear is like a harmonica playing a single note; just real loud and only at WOT. I have never heard this before since I bought this car 3 months ago. I have also driven several other 850 Turbo cars and never heard the sound like that before. Is it something that comes from age?
