Transmission Problem? 850 1993

I have a warning light blinking on my dashboard. The light is and upward pointing arrow at the bottom left corner of the cluster of indicator lights located on the lower righthand side of the dashboard.

I consulted the owner's manual and it states that if this light begins to blink it indicates a "fault in the gearbox." The manual says "Please contact your Volvo dealer."

The car is running although the transmission does seem sluggish.

Can anyone tell me what I am in for here? Is this a major repair?

    You can always flush the transmission this may help.... cheap fix...

    You might want to see if you are getting any error codes. If you have a 93-95 850, you can check the built in diagnostic connectors. Go to the following link to find more info on this.

    You must be new to this group. The standard brickboard procedure is:

    1. Read error codes at socket A1

    2. Clear error codes.

    3. Analyze error codes.

    You can get instructions at volvospeed.com (bay 13). This could be anything form some intermittent computer glitch that will never repeat to a failing transmission (with a bad PNP switch in between).

    Common problem discussed in several threads here. Look for

    posts with "PNP" in the title (below) -- that is probably

    your problem.

    The blinking indicator light, shaped as an upward pointing arrow, is the "winter mode" indicator. Normally it is supposed to light up when you swith the transmission to winter mode.

      In winter more it should be solid. If its blinking - your transmission is unhappy.
