Intemittent Steering Wheel Shake & Vibration V70-XC70 2000

I have recently observed slight steering wheel shake as well as some vibration which appears to be more pronounced on the passenger side of the car. This is intermittent or cyclic. It is most observable at approximately 28mph, but even then intermittent. Some times when I drive the car I do not observe it. It is almost like it does not occur until the car has been driven and warmed up. Occasionally I noticed the vibration and steering wheel shake when the car is drifting to a stop at very slow speed (less than 10mph).

My XC has 22,700 miles, Continental Tires, which have been rotated by the dealer at each scheduled maintenance. At the last maintenance 22,500 the dealer spin balanced all the tires. I do not notice excessive tire wear on the outside of the tires.

What other are some of the other causes than tires: camber slop on the front end, alignment, wheel bearings, AWD drive system, suspension yokes, splined joint, e.t.c

I have very little mechancial expereince and always have dealer maintenance and repairs. What are the key questions I should as the master mechanic at the dealer to get beyond their only considering tire problems?

    Tires V70-XC70 2000

Those Continental Tires have been nothing but trouble and we're seeing many problems with them on early XCs. We don't recommend using the same tires but they might be your cheapest option as they're pro-rated by a tire dealer that sells them, so I'm told.

To know if your problem is caused by those tires, have someone run the car on a hoist in gear and watch the tires spinning. Most likely they'll be very out of round and possibly splitting on the outer edges where the treads meet the sidewall.

      Re: Tires V70-XC70 2000

I've also noticed an intermittent vibration with the Continentals at low speeds that feels a bit like rough pavement. For now I've got winter tires on that don't do that but the Continentals will go back on in the spring. Now that you remind me I'll inspect them carefully.

Given that the Continentals don't seem to be highly regarded tires by many Volvo folks, out-of-round problems are fairly common with all brands. A trick I've heard of that sometimes cures out-of-roundness is rotating the tires on the rim 180 degrees. The idea is to match a low spot on the wheel with a high spot on the tire. Evidently, many tires are slightly out-of-round or have stiff spots which can result in vibrations if the tire is mounted over a high spot on the wheel. There are special machines to measure tire roundness under load--just watching a tire spin freely may not be adequate to identify the problem.

I Agree with John O. The tires Volvo installs on a new car are the cheapest they can get. If you do find the tire is out of round go and get a new set of tires. It is good insurance.

        Re: Tires V70-XC70 2000

As I've posted in another thread, same senerio, the XC country Continental tire problem is so common (several per week by us now) that we have a pre-printed optional tire price sheet made out so that we're not going to our parts dept all the time for the same thing.

If the car has lower mileage, tire dealers who sell Continentals pro-rate these so the cost is less than buying 4 new tires of another brand, although I doubt the newer Continentals are better, just new.

The new 2001 XCs don't use Continentals anymore.

    Hi Joe,

Check to see if your tires are out of round (ie not round but slightly oval). I had this problem on and older car that hated to have tires that were not perfectly round. A vibration was most noted at 30mph.
