CD changer redux? 850 1995

Well, it appears as if my CD changer is going south. Regardless of which CD is in the changer, it will intermittently skip roughly every 45-90 seconds - but not all the time. I thought that maybe the lens was dirty - however I used a cleaner CD on it and there's no change. Anybody experience this at all? How much does a new changer cost? I'm sure it's something absurd.

Thanks.

Re: CD changer redux? 850 1995

Well, following Scott's directions, I was able to disassemble my unit this evening. Found the source of the skipping: A big hunk of greasy substance was sitting on the laser head rail. I was able to wipe off the substance with a little dexterity and some Q-tips. Put it back together and went for a test drive - no skips. The clue that there was something wrong with the head movement was that it was really only skipping toward the end of a CD, rather than the beginning, and that it seemed to do it more when I turned right and started from a stop. It would hardly ever do it when I shook the unit itself.

Just a tip for those willing to take their units apart. You may save yourself a wad of cash.

I started having similiar problems with my changer. I disconnected it, sat it on a clean towel, took the upper and lower cases off, and just gave it a basic cleaning. I worked the cartridge unit through its paces, up and down, (just by turning the gears), same thing for the cd roller. I put it back together and haven't had a problem with it for over six months now.

If you need to replace your cd changer - get an Alpine (601S ? or sucessor).

Thats what I have in my 1995 850 - it is completely compatable with the volvo factory head unit.

I believe you can pick one up for around $250 plus install.
