Turn signal bulb failure V70-XC70 1998

bP>If there are any others out there that have been annoyed by the repeated failure of your XC turn signal bulbs, Volvo has finally provided a fix in a recall. I took mine in today and they removed the original socket and blade bulb and replaced it with a recall directed socket that accepted the old proven style round base bulb. They said this should resolve the problem. I was also curious how to replace said bulb if I had to do it myself. You depress a small bayonet catch from above and the whole turn signal unit comes out. Until that disclosure it looked like I had to remove the fender to get to the bulb, the access space is so confined from the rear or underneath!

The owners manual details how to remove all the plastic lenses

to replace the bulbs. I had seen the procedure for the turn signal

lens removal described (here) but still could not figure it out

until I looked at the diagrams in the manual.

Re: Turn signal bulb failure V70-XC70 2000

I had the same problem with a less than a year old 2000 XC. The problem apears when the left turning light blinks faster than normal. I called the dealer and they told me about the recall.

It was a 10 min fix. It is a good thing to buy it late. Some one needs to debug it after all.

I think volvo must have used some cheap labour when the light bulb sockets were made...

Anyways, I had the same problem with the front left turn signal of my 2000 v70. To remove the bulb you need to craw under the car and reach from the ground up (in front of the left front wheel)from behind the front fender. You can actually see the light socket when you look from behind the front fender with your head on the floor looking up. In my case I just held the socket with my hand and turned left to loosen the socket. I never took my car to the dealer for the recall, instead I cleaned the dirty bulb contacts (due to electrical arching) and pushed the contacts in towards the bulb so that I could get a good contact between the socket contacts and the bulb contacts. And so far all is well.

A Norbet....no need for all the crawling under the car. Just look in your owners manual. It will show you how to remove the turn signal housing. I replaced my bulbs with the glass base ones....used a bit of dielect. greese on the contacts.....and no probs for quite some time now.

          Steve,

That sounded much easier... I'll try the easy route next time
