Antenna replacement S70 1998

I attempted to replace my antenna this afternoon but had a little trouble. I loosened and removed the tie-down nut first. Once the nut is off, the directions state "turn the radio on and gently pull up on the mast until all of the white plastic gearing is free of the car."

Well I pulled and pulled but never saw any of the white plastic gearing. I was pulling a little more than gently and still it would not budge. I know this is supposed to be a simple job but this is ridiculous. Any thoughts?

In my experience, I have removed and taken apart the antenna to remove all parts. Reassemble and feed the new toothed portion into the antenna tube. Make sure radio is on and antenna hooked up when feeding the new portion and make sure the teeth face the right way.

I just did this on my 98 S70 and it took considerable force to get the bottom portion of the mast out of it. I used pliers to yank it.

There is a spacer sleeve inside the top of the mast that must also come out. Note, your 'new' mast has one. This sleeve tends to crud up badly. Once the 16mm nut is off the fender, you should be able to just barely see it.

You might carefully try to turn the spacer a little to get it loose, just do not damage the shaft that comes up from the motor.

Klaus,
I think I know what you mean. Are you referring to a very thin like lip that slightly overlaps the brass colored threaded portion?

Is the brass/gold colored threaded portion what you are calling the shaft?

Thanks to all for your responses!

That lip is a 2.5 inch sleeve. The threaded portion is part of the antenna motor shaft.

On my 1995, I took a pair of regular pliers and clamped them behind the very top button on the end of the antenna. Then tapped the pliers upward with a hammer to get the sleeve out. Easy for me, being rather tall.

O.K., that may work for me being that I am 6"4". I'll give it a shot.
