heater core 850 1997

Mine's leaking onto the floor board. What's the replacement job like? Going to try some stop leak, hopefully a fix until summer.

All you really need is a couple torx screw drivers and some patience.

Remove the drivers and passenger side kick panels. 6 screws.

loosen the carpet on both sides of the center consol and remove the two screws holding the black plastic guards in place.

loosen the one screw holding the heater core pipe to the core from the firewall. the screw faces you and is right in between the pipes.

take out the 4 screws that hold the heater core in the air duct system. Pull the unit all the way down to the floor and remove from the car without wrecking the pipes or firewall connector. They say the passenger side is easier.

I had the unit out in like 30 minutes, but wrecked the firewall connector.

It only takes an hour or so in your driveway. Order 2 O rings and a core, ASAP! The foam padding under your carpet will not dry out for months and will cause the floor to rust. Besides, adding coolant is not fun when it is very cold out.

Your small leak is a warning. Stop leak should not be used in these engines.

I'll get it ordered today. What happens if you try the stop-leak?
On a a side note, I put in a new Hepu water pump last March and it's already leaking through the frost plug. Any tips on replacing the core would be appreciated. Thanks. Dew

I looked at the usual sites and could not find any good tutorials.
a couple of them have you removing the coolant tubes at the firewall, which I do not suggest.

The following link is a pain because of the Photobucket approach, but it is the correct way to repl the core. I suggest using a plastic shopping bag to collect spilling more antifreeze inside the car. You can also use vice grips(2) to squeeze the hoses closed between the engine and firewall, so you don't have to 'drain' the system. There is about 1/2 quart of coolant in the core at all times.

You will need the O rings for the coolant pipes at the core. Don't forget the torx screw that holds the pipes to the core!
