Blinking Amber Arrow on Dash Problem 850 96

Hi all,

I've got a '96 Volvo 850 turbo. Lately, and it seems it might be happening on the colder days, an amber arrow (pointing up) starts blinking on the dash when the car is started. It's the same arrow that comes on when you are in a lower gear than "Drive". When this starts blinking, the car has NO GUTS at all! Barely moves. The manual says take it to the dealer, (of course). It sounds like a computer problem telling the tranny to not work right to me. Can anyone tell me what I can check? Thanks! Joe

I had the same problem with my 96 last year. It happened on an extremely cold day and the check engine light stayed on for about two months. It has never happened again.

This could be the PNP switch for the transmssion (the fact that

it does this when cold susggests that is what it is). Many

of these have started to fail (our 95 has the same problem).

(This is not the sport/econ/winter mode switch -- PNP is mounted

    on the transmission itself.)

A dealer can read the transmission's error code to determine

    the problem.

Also, you can turn off the engine and restart and sometimes

that gets the tranny out of "limp-home" mode (that is when

it locks itslef in third gear after detecting a fault).

Search the archives for "PNP: to find additional info.

I had a similar problem in December with my 96 850 (non-turbo) at about 65K miles. The arrow light was on and when I accelerated from a stop the car was locked in 3 gear (or higher). I took it to the dealer and they replaced the sport/econ/winter switch that had apparently gone bad. Cost me about $100 for parts and labor. You can probably fix for less.

Thanks for the help. Can anyone tell me what I can expect to pay for this PNP switch? An archive I saw stated about $300.00. OUCH! Thanks again!

      Joe

        Hi Joe.

I have had this happen to my '94 non-turbo twice in the past 6 months. The first time it went away on its own the next day, the second time I cleared the codes on the A1 plug of the diagnostic unit after I read the code and it went away. Both times it was colder than normal outside.
