Won't Start 850

I have a 1993 850 that drove perfectly before parking it for a month (dry garage storage).

Now it won't start as if there is no spark, it just cranks over without even a hint of firing. Battery is fine, turns overs strong, spark is fine as tested using spark tester, fuel rail is 40psi, and no codes. I tested resistance on the coil, replaced the distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires, pulled plugs and they look fine. I've tried pressing gas pedal half way and full way while turning over and nothing. I smell gas out tail pipe and in engine bay (not a lot).

Timing belt is fine.

Engine is a b5254s. Ignition system is Motronic system.

I have the pocket date booklet. It shows additional diagnostics in Mode 2 - throttle position, etc. Does anyone know how to get to Mode 2 in the codes?

Anyone else had this experience? If it's getting gas and spark, I figure it must not be getting air?? Can I remove the air intake and look into it to see anything while someone else starts it?

Getting to other modes using the diagnostics is easy. Just push the button twice for mode 2, three times for mode 3, etc. One push is for mode 1 = codes.

Everyone's car runs fine when they are 'parked' for a while.

When you crankk the starter, dies the engine turn over rapidly? Like there is no compression? Then look for 'lawnmower syndrome', a common zero compression problem.

Yes, you can open the air filter and look for nesting animals.

No it turns over as normal. It does squeak as it turns over. If anything it sounds as if the air intake is plugged. I wondered if you remove the air intake hose and try to start it if it would foul up the MAF sensor etc and throw codes or put it into limp mode or something.

      Thanks.

Removing the intake hose at the throttle body will set a code. You need to check the air filter box anyway, so I suggest removing the filter and trying to restart without the cover on the filter box.

You might also have a problem with the idle air control not opening enough, or, the throttle body being completely crusted.

Throttle body looks fine. I am now suspecting the throttle switch, as there is no "click" upon opening the throttle. I'm surprised that no code has been set ...if indeed the switch is bad. I wonder if it is possible for the switch or the throttle position sensor to go bad and not throw a code?

          Thanks for your help.

The TPS only throws a code if there is no communication. The TPS can be cleaned, carefully. Qtip + brake cleaner on the cotton.
