Faulty alarm set off by faulty 2001 V70 S80 2000

Hi Brickboarders:

In the past I've reported two occasions when my MY00 S80's alarm has activated in error. The first posting described such an event while the car was parked at a rest stop alongside the Interstate freeway. The second posting was quite recent and described an event that appeared to be caused by another Volvo MY01 V70 owner parked nearby when using their remote.

The effect is for my alarm/siren to sound without the car being unlocked, leaving the LED light flashing rapidly.

I inquired about this today while having my first 7500 mile service. The Service Manager had read a recent Volvo bulletin describing this problem. The problem lies in bad UEM software in *some* 2001 models; S80s, V70s and S60s.

For MY2001 S80s the chasis number range is in the 161196-169730 range (last 7 digits of the VIN). There are ranges given for MY2001 S60s, V70s and XCs but I didn't note them down -- sorry.

As this problem reportedly lies in MY2001 Volvo cars there appeared nothing that could be done to my car to avoid this from happening (however, see followup below). It's up to the owners of the affected MY2001 cars to have their service techs download the Volvo software to bugfix their cars.

If this is of interest to MY2001 owners I'll obtain more details (ie the Volvo Bulletin #, etc) and post back.

So for the time being I'll keep my eye open for other 2001 Volvos nearby when I park my car.

Trouble is, my neighbour has just bought a brand new '01 V70 XC -- soooo, it's going to be interesting :)

<<<< Followup >>>>

My service mgr has found out that my car can be protected from these bothersome faulty 2001 models :) :)

A software download #543 (Part #8637479) can be applied to my MY2000 S80 to protect it from the faulty alarms.

The sw dl process takes about 1hr and will be done at no cost to me as it will be covered under the new car warranty :) :)

Regards... Barry

Interesting.... my dealer (Lovering Volvo, Nashua NH) knows absolutely nothing about this software download. Could somebody explain why?

Re: Faulty alarm set off by faulty 2001 V70 S80 2000

I will attempt to explain, someone on the brickboard mentioned a software download for the "S80" to stop the MY 2001 vechicles from setting off their alarm. There is no such software as of 02/03/01(went into work and read ALL messages concerning this). There are messages about the 2001 built after week 31, but those messages don't refer to or mention the MY 2000 vechicles. Now what is going to be done about the 2001 interfearing with the 2000 I'm not sure, if this is happening I'm sure Volvo will come out with a repair, and more than likely it will be a software up-date.

Re: Faulty alarm set off by faulty 2001 V70 S80 2000

Barry Sharp reported this problem. I have also experienced it. According to Barry a MY2001 S70 key fob activation will sometimes setoff MY2000 S80 alarms... if the cars are in close proximity. Perhaps it does not happen to all vehicles. Anyway, Barry reported a download number and a part number supposedly solves the problem for MY2000 S80 owners who experience the problems. My dealer didn't know anything about it.

I am familiar with Barry Sharps post and should have said something when he posted it, there wasn't then nor is there at this point in time a software fix for the problem you and he are experiencing. The 2001 key fob activation would not be from an S70, they stopped making the S70 MY 2000, but I get your point. I also believe the problem is happening, several people have complained about it, I have not seen it at the dealer I work at yet.

      Bob

who were you talking to? some of the people there may not be in the repair loop or don't keep abreast of the latest information.

DCS 88-18 and DCS 88-19 might help your cause, or try some other Volvo store.

      C.

Re: Faulty alarm set off by faulty 2001 V70 S80 2000

I had my car in the shop for service. Are you suggesting that the Service Department might not be in the "repair loop"? Who would know better?

What is DCS 88-18 and DCS 88-19? Are these service bulletins? If so, why should it be necessary for me (the customer) to provide this information to the service department? They should know these things if they are professionals.

Why should I have to try some other Volvo store? I paid $43,000 for this "luxury sports car". Shouldn't I be able to get it serviced properly at any dealership. By the way, I paid an extra $1000 for a radio that is a piece of shit, too.

My questions, of course, are a little tongue in cheek. It's evident to me that Volvo stores are just not capable of servicing the customer who expects quality treatment. They're too busy servicing their lower priced, lower margin cars to understand the difference. The total focus is on moving cars in/out as fast as possible. They go through the motions on the high end cars, too. That ain't good enough.

my dealer service has kept me....a very picky guy indeed 100% happy for 11 years now.

Dont be such a dam cry baby....big deal 43K....so what. Do you think if you buy a 200K Ferrari it will be made by the hand of GOD....and perfect in every way....It will not be. Do you think the Ferrari dealers have PERFECT people working on the cars.....they dont. You would STILL have to find a quality dealer service dept., and that should be done BEFORE you buy the car!

Just find a dealer who can do quality work(you are going to need one)or sell your "high end" Volvo now......if you dont you will be VERY sorry.

With these cars its the dealer service dept...not sales....not parts..not VCNA...that will make the whole ownership trip a very good thing....

Steve - thanks so much for your constructive assistance. If you know so much about the S80s, how come you don't own one?

It never fails to amaze me how there can be so many people willing to accept mediocre treatment. As long as these people are out there, Volvo dealers will never learn how to service owners of a "luxury sports sedan". If they can't service them - Volvo shouldn't be selling them as "luxury" anything. That's the point!

Re: Faulty alarm set off by faulty 2001 V70 S80 2000

I would never stand for half ass service.......

That is why I am happy with the Volvo I drive. My point....that you cant/will not grasp is that no matter how much you spend, or what the manif. calls the type of car you buy.....it will not be perfect. You only recourse for this is to not buy any cars, or sell it if you bought it, or FIND A GOOD DEALER SERVICE DEPT. who will get everything sorted out in short order.

You do know each Volvo dealer is independently owned.....and not undr the strict rule of VCNA.

              You bought a S80....its a fine car....but not a perfect car.

Dont cry and whine like some little girl about it! Do something about it!

OH as for why I didnt buy a S80.......I didnt want one. I try to stick with the proven models.

Steve - Happy to hear you stick with proven models. You make my point precisely.

Of course any car will not be perfect. But if I pay $1000.00 for a premium radio I damn straight expect it to work. As for doing something about it - it's already been in the shop three times for this same problem and I've only owned the car 9 months. I can't stand over the technicians all day long to watch what they do. This last time the tech apparently got in my car, drove it around the block and reported that there was nothing wrong with the radio.

You just can't stand someone making a negative comment about Volvo without conjuring up a personal attack. Check in with your shrink this week, Steve. You need to adjust your prescription again.

The thing is you make a neg. comment on "Volvo" when it should be the dealer who is getting the neg. comment. There HAS to be something wrong with you to take you car to the same place for the same problem.....more than two times.....cant you tell they dont know what they are doing? You say the tech went around the corner in your car, and then said the raido was ok.....right......well why the hell would you be so stupid to take your car back to them?

You know the more I read your posts, the more I thik YOU are the problem and NOT the dealer. I told you....sell the car, or find a place that knows how to work on it. You cry baby!

OH and if you dont like my posts.....its too bad!

Geez, quit your bitchin'! Just because you spend $43,000 on a car doesn't make you the god of car owners. Even the service reps and technicians working at the dealership can smell a pain in the ass from a mile away. If you're gonna be a whiny bitch all the time, expect some half-assed service because they think you probably deserve it. Either go somewhere else or toss your $1000 radio (oh my god, so expensive, I'm shaking in my boots!! tell me the secret to your success, please--oh pretty please!!).

                          Whine elsewhere...

I have a 3 month old 2001 XC and would be very interested in any additional information you obtain about the alarm software update and any interactions with your neighbor's XC.

    Thanks,
