Tranny Problems? V70-XC70 2001

Here's the deal. My ready cash tends to be limited, and I'm needing to bring a newer Volvo into the family in the not-too-distant future.

I've found a 2001 v70 for an affordable price. The catch is that 1st gear is performing badly. I haven't driven it yet, but know that the seller tends to start it out in 2nd, and that it drives quite well on the interstate.

Does this sound like "complete-transmission-rebuild" territory, or might I be able to bring it back or delay failure until I can source a good transmission.

So far, 1998 is the newest Volvo I've worked on and feel comfortable with. I'm not sure just how different the P2 models are from the P80s

--edit--
Seems like the 2001 is known for issues... reading some stuff over at MVS.

Opinions and advice are still welcome

The early 5 speed auto did have a lot of problems. The dealers were told by the home office to supply tranny software updates for free, and these updates must be done.

You didn't state what the 1st gear problem was. If it is a shift to neutral problem, the software eliminates this. If it is a hard shift, there is a 'fix' for it supplied by IPD.

Has the ATF (3309) been flushed?

Considering all of the other problems with the first year of the P2 model, I would skip it and look for 2003+ cars.

For rich folks, there is a 2005 V50 with 115K miles for $9K:

If you want a sedan, check out the S80 2002+

There is a 1998 V90 up here for around $2K, miles unknown, white with tinted windows.

I agree with KlausC but I'm going to be a bit stronger in my recommendation:

Run away and don't look back.

The 2001 has enough problems as it is, many of them hidden/lurking. If this car is already showing symptoms it's already on the slope to becoming a money-pit.

Find yourself a 2003-2007 even if it costs more money to get it. You'll end up ahead in the long-run.

        I third that motion!

Based on what I've read here go 2003 or newer or 1998 or older.

You guys sure know how to kill my volvo buzz. :)
          Warning received.

Is there a price where the purchase of such a car might outweigh the issues associated with a 2001 Transmission?

130k miles, body looks excellent... gearbox is kinda important... My guess is that the gearbox never got the neutral-stop update...

IMHO there is not really any price. I don't think I would ever own a 2001 unless it's free and even then I would be wary to take on the possible expenses. There are just so many other cars available that don't have the problems of the 2001. Ideally someone might have a 2001 that they meticulously maintained esp trans oil changes and bevel gear oil, with carefully maintained leather and no squeaks at all, and no indication of transmission problems.... I would probably consider this car despite the problems with the year.

The general consensus on this board is to just stay away. There are probably good individual cars, but as a class they have such a bad reputation it hardly seems worth it to even try.

FWIW the transmission is not the only problem with this car, though it is a huge huge problem.

The AWD system is generally seen as pretty wimpy and likely to fall apart or even blow up. Also this is the "all four tires at once" variety of AWD, so if you mess up one tire you're pretty much stuck getting 4 new ones. Not so for 2003+.

It has the early Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) which was very flawed and always fails. The fix is a rebuild by XeMoDex.com.

Plus there are all the usual 'first year' materials and build-quality problems too. I would expect one of these cars to be pretty creaky/squeaky/noisy at this age.

Ah.. nails in the coffin. Damn.
              2002 is bad as well?

I would consider the 2002 almost as bad. The Transmission software was better I think but still not 'fixed'. Fluid changes are, as always, still required.

I would stay away from AWD until 2003 for sure.

Crap, all this good info, only it's 5 years and several $$$$$ later. :( I bought a 2001 XC70 automatic about 5 years ago and learned about the 4 identical tires the hard way ( blown transfer case). I notice a hard shift every now and again, almost like the tranny is catching up with the rest of the car. It's a great ride when it's running perfectly, but the $$$$$$ :(
