flashing check engine light S80 2002

Dear All,

At 146,000 miles (2.9 normally asperated) had a flashing Check Engine light and rumbling like severly out-of-balance front tires today. Fault was intermittent. Drove for about 35 miles that way. I suspect a bad coil, and will pull the plugs in the morning to see if there are any signs. Any suggestions or other ideas?

Thanks.

R Stuart

Problm was a coil, the plugs were replaced, too, as they were overdue. Put 400 miles on in the last 4 days. Runs well.

Thanks Klaus and MK00...001,

Had to run out this morning and it continued. Stopped into my local indy on the way home and his thought it my be a coil issue, but said the code will tell him the cyliner number(s) and will go from there. I appreciate your responses and will update this message. I have not changed the plugs since last time called for in Volvo maintenance schedule (that's the only thing I do per the book, everything else is done on an overkill basis).

My son is back for a few days with his 2002 V70. I changed the oil with Pennzoil super-duper platinum and a Mahle filter. He was wondering about the air filter. I noticed one of the lock-downs on the A/F cover was not secure, and I could not secure it. So, I opened it up, and found the A/F inside was not appropriate (UNDERSIZE!), and he has essentially been running w/o an A/F for quite some time. I'd like to get my hands on the turkey that put that in.

R Stuart

A single cyl constant misfire results in a solid CEL. Multiple misfire causes the flashing CEL. You need to get the codes read, ASAP.

flashing cel means knock sensor is sensing detonation. Replace the plugs, and see how it runs. Check the cel and see what cylinder has the issue..

Hi All,

Now have P0300, P0304, and P0305.

Relpaced coils on 4 & 5 cylinders.

Still rough.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Misfire on #3 and #5, the P0300 is redundant as it says that there are multiple misfires.

What kind of spark plugs did you put in last October? How many miles since then? I suggest pulling plugs 3,4,5 and comparing them for deposits - it could be a dirty injector.

Hi Klaus,

161k on the clock now and getting ugly. Appears to be a sticking valve. Doing the Marvel Mystry Oil routine. Hoping it will free up. Whis my '98 S70 wasn't wrecked by a venison.
