Trans Service V70-XC70 2003

Both my 03 V70 and my wife's 05 S80 seem to have unserviceable transmissions, meaning there's just a large plug where I would expect to find a dip stick. the V70 has about 160,000 miles on it and I don't have any service records, so I'm a bit concerned about keeping it going. Do I completely drain it and refill it with a measured amount of fluid? What kind of fluid is recommended? I is there a filter?

Thanks.

    I Found It! Thanks, All V70-XC70 2003

Yep - I found the dipstick on the wife's S80 alrighty. It's a good thing I picked up that funnel with the loooooooooong neck that day in Big Lots!

Also, thanks for the info on sourcing the proper fluid.

#1, you can not completely drain an automatic tranny.
#2, you can flush them by using the ATF cooler hose at the radiator.

But, you need to find the dipstick with the yellow handle so you can add more ATF. Have you looked on the driver's side, under the intake air hose?

On my 2009 S60, the dipstick is tiny and deep down in the place Klaus described.

        Klaus / Max,

OK, I'll take another (very close) look. Dang thing is illusive.

I find it strange that the owners manual makes absolutely no mention of checking the trans fluid.

Funny too, there is nothing in the maintenance schedule about changing the fluid. But I will tell you this; there is a definite improvement in operation when the system is flushed.

There are also a number of things you need to watch out for.

There is a coolant loop through the radiator. At one point they changed the direction. In other words, during several model years the top hose was the return. In other years it was the bottom.

The connection uses a special clamp and O-rings. You need to have these on hand.

Depending on who manufactured the transmission, you may need special Toyota/Lexus/Volvo/Aisin-Warner fluid. If you use something else it’s good bye transmission. The fluid can be purchased at a Toyota dealer or Mobil distributor as 3309 type.

If you look in the past posts and search the internet you’ll find a lot of information on how to do this. Just like flushing a RWD 940 AW70…..

There may even be a pdf on the IPD site.

The special fluid you speak of is JWS-3309 or Toyota-IV, which is particular to the 5sp transmissions.

            Rule of thumb:
            5 sp = 3309/T-IV
            4 sp = DEX-III

If this car is a 2003 as per the thread settings, it almost certainly has the 5sp trans and thus needs 3309/T-IV fluid.

There are many other companies that specify that their fluid is acceptable for use in place of 3309/T-IV fluid as well. The synthetics companies come to mind, like AMSOIL.

To be fair, I'm pretty convinced that this fluid (3309/T-IV) is essentially the same as DEX-III with lots of friction modifier additive.

As far as I can tell, using regular DEX-III in the 3309 transmission would merely result in harsh clutch lockups, which I guess /could/ harm the transmission if you really rocked it hard. But with easy driving I think it would really just amount to annoying loud jerky shifting with little actual damage.

Also, there are companies that sell the friction modifier separately and so if someone accidentally filled their trans with DEX-III I really think you could salvage the fluid (and thus all the money) by adding the friction modifiers.

Additionally, 3309/T-IV in a DEX-III transmission would likely cause no ill effects whatsoever.

I have no first hand experience with any of this though.
