crankcase pressure 850 1994

hello,
1994 850 NA. i removed the flame trap and replaced hoses for PCV system a while ago and still have excessive crankcase pressure (smoke blowing out dipstick tube when dipstick is removed, some oil on top of engine, distributor side).

then i removed the TB and unclogged the little hole in the intake where the EGR valve is. i did not remove the EGR valve because that little bolt in the back was too hard to get at (and it was getting dark!) with that now unclogged, put everything back together and something's not right. takes an extra crank or two to start and seems to be running a little rough now. there is still excessive crankcase pressure as well.

i am 99% sure that i put everything back together. any ideas? i read that that hole above the EGR is the biggest culprit for excessive crankcase pressure. should i bite the bullet and try to get the EGR valve off? by unclogging the hole without removing the EGR is it possible that i made things worse?
thanks!

When I cleared the intake manifold egr port, the egr valve was plugged up solid as well. You could break loose the hose to the EGR at the flame trap and see if it relieves crankcase pressure.
After you clear all the blockage switch to synthetic oil, it's not so prone to
clogging up.

I have the same problem. I also replaced the flame trap hoses and threw out the screen. Does anyone know of a good diagram/illustration of that area or is it pretty self-evident what needs to be done and I should just go ahead and dive in?

Thx,
Jim

did you remove the EGR for cleaning? if so, the only piece remaining is the oil trap which is located under the intake. the intake needs to come off in order to access it.

this is a recently acquired car and i had just put synthetic oil in the last change, not 2 days later i cracked the oil pan in my long, rocky driveway. it's currently running dino oil because i figured i'd use cheap oil after replacing the oil pan in case there were any leaks. there aren't so i'll be using synth at the next change.

i just cleaned the EGR. it is a real pain in the ass to get out. i had to stop when putting it back in because i have things to do today and can't have black hands. any advice getting that SOB back on are am i just gonna have to keep swearin til it lines up?

I wanted to respond to your post so it will "move up in line" and it might get noticed by someone more knowledgable than the three of us.

No, I didn't remove the EGR for cleaning. Haven't gotten any further than replacing the flame trap's hoses and tossing the screen. Removing the EGR and cleaning it are new territory for me...

I too would prefer not to remove the intake manifold. Sounds like a PITA job. Plus I've never done one before.

So is the EGR attached to one of the flame trap hoses or where do I look for it?

it is on the intake manifold just below where the throttle body bolts to the manifold. it took me almost 2 hours to get the thread started on the inside bolt yesterday...

I feel your pain... I didn't enjoy yanking the EGR valve and intake manifold
for the first time. It was a pain in the ass job.
I just picked up the Harbor Freight digital inspection camera
and think maybe the job can be done without yanking the intake manifold.
Maybe pull the EGR valve and clear the intake manifold port via the
Throttle body flange.
Maybe some seasoned veterans can chime in on this?

i havent yanked the intake manifold yet. hoping to avoid doing that by cleaning the EGR (it was pretty clogged). putting the EGR back onto the intake, though, is not easy...

My EGR valve AND the port on my intake manifold was plugged with a crusty
hard mess. The blockage on the intake manifold poked out easily, but it remains to
be proved that it can be cleared while still mounted on the block.

Post back with any good news.

Bill
