Must be my sense of humor - turning radius S80

I asked Volvo to help me clarify a turning radius question. The FWD S80 turns in 37ft, the AWD turns in 42ft. Why such a big difference when the front suspension has the same geometry?

Response:

Hi Klaus:

Thank you for contacting us and for your interest in the 2011 S80.

The turning radius will not differ due to a vehicle being FWD as opposed to AWD. The turning radius will differ when there is a different wheel size on the vehicles.

The 2011 S80 FWD offers a 17" wheel as standard equipment. The 2011 S80 AWD offers an 18" wheel.

Wider tires limit the steering radius. The reason is the bigger tire can't rub against the wheel well.

We hope this information is helpful to you.

Sincerely,

Volvo Customer Care

"The reason is the bigger tire can't rub against the wheel well." WTF?
    Too funny......
This implies that the smaller tire is supposed to rub the wheel well.

    My next question S80

    Which I haven't asked yet:

Because all four wheels cause traction, shouldn't the AWD have narrower tires than the FWD?
