Engine impersonating a Diesel V70-XC70 2001

Did new control arms on my V70 T5 this weekend (149k), along with 2 right side CV boots. No engine work at all. When I cranked it up for a test run, the engine missed and started clattering like an old Mercedes 240D. Timing marks appear ok (hard to see the crank mark). I've cleared 2 or 3 P0344 CPS codes and 2 P0014's. Starts pretty easy and idles and revs smoothly, just loud clatter. No power if I try to drive it. Good news is there are no more pops or creaks from the right side suspension! Bad news is I can't drive it. Any ideas?

Thanks,
jbb

Your timing is much too advanced! I suggest removing the VVT solenoid and cleaning it. Look under the sparkplug cover, next to the timing belt. Use carb cleaner and then motor oil.

Thanks, Klaus. I'll try that today after work. I pulled it off yesterday and it looked pretty clean. Is there any way to test the solenoid for proper function? I read 5 ohms on it and I thought about energizing it to see if it moved, but wasn't sure if it operates at a full 12V.

Also, I verified that the two cams are correctly aligned relative to each other. How can I be certain the crankshaft is right? When I changed the belt a couple of years ago, I marked everything as I found it and kept all 3 in the same relative positions. I don't recall there being a reference mark on the block for crank position, but as I said, it's been a couple of years.

Thanks again

Thanks for the link, Klaus- lots of good information. I removed, cleaned and tested the solenoid and it appears to be working. I reinstalled it today with a new gasket, but no change in the performance. I did get a new code after starting it- P0343 "Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 Circuit High Input".

I'm still wondering if the belt jumped a tooth on the crank. I removed the belt cover while working on the suspension to look for an oil leak. I had some difficulty getting the cover back into position before cranking the engine, but it seemed to be right. Maybe the cover was in contact with the belt or tensioner when I started it. Seems unlikely, but that is the only thing I did that was remotely associated with this problem. If that's not it, I don't know what to do besides start replacing some expensive parts.

Belts don't "jump" unless the tensioner fails. The cam position sensor could be the problem. A $dealer$ might be a cheaper choice, only because they have better diagnostic tools than a generic scanner.

Klaus,
I finally had time and the right light and found the belt timing out by 2 teeth. Based on how quiet it is now, it may have been off by 1 to begin with. Only problem now is it misses when I get into it hard, especially 3rd gear. Will the computer need some time to adjust, or should I look further?

Thanks

A high speed miss at full throttle is going to be hard to find. There are a lot of possibilities.

Personally I would start with ignition stuff, but my car has the old distributor ignition. The direct ignition on your car should solve any of the 'normal' problems with the older style ignition system.

A new set of plugs wouldn't hurt though.
