Exhaust Manifold Upgrade C70 1998

Hey All. Got a T5 C70 and I'm wondering what donor car could provide me with the "upgraded" R-style exhaust manifold. Some newer volvos are starting to show up in the local junkyards. as I understand it, this is a bolt-on upgrade. My manifold looks like the upper version...

While I love IPD, I'm not going to fork out $555.54 for something that could be sitting in the local yard for under $50.00.

    Exhaust Manifold Upgrade C70 1998

1998+ "R" engines only (2.3L), as far as I know. Save it for a rainy day!

Yeah, not exactly on my priority things-to-do list, just wanted to get an idea what to look for next time I hit the junkyard.

However... considering that the manifold has been the #1 problem in my head gasket job, it would be an idea time for a swap...

        Got an R Manifold for my C70 C70 1998

While I'm still unsure what's causing my engine noises - it's clear that exhaust fumes are getting into the cabin and that I need to get into the back of the engine again and check all the seals.

Since I'll be removing the manifold again... I decided to drop a little extra dough and get a new manifold.

I found a nice R manifold from Erie Volvo for a bit over $200.00. A tad expensive, but still way cheaper than the cost of the new stock model and way cheaper than IPD (Sorry guys, I'm still buying stuff from ya, just not this part!)

The new manifold arrived today. The thing looks brand new. Perfect stud threads, zero rust or grime, original Swedish cast iron performance goodness.

I've got new manifold and turbo nuts as well as the two turbo gaskets enroute. I expect the rest of the goodies to arrive on Friday.

So... aside from more efficient exhaust routing, is there anything special about installing an R manifold?

Maybe a better question is this - just what does this thing actually "do" for performance? I got it because I worry about weird cast-lines/cracks in my manifold.

Are there other "R" stock specific bits I can hunt up for this car?

Other than spending big bucks for a larger turbo, larger exhaust, and a very expensive chip from IPD, I would investigate new turbo to intercooler piping. The hard plastic type that reverses the IC flow and cuts about 18 inches out of the flow will help increase throttle response.

IPD also has a new heavy duty boost controller for less than $50, which includes 3 new vacuum lines. Quite nice. Yours should be very dirty with the mileage you have.

Thanks for the tips Klaus. I'm working on the car this weekend and hope to finally wrap up these issues. Most recent opinion on MVS supports your original hypothesis of manifold leak. Hope this new one will answer the question.

Got a new timing belt on the way too. I worry that I've monkeyed around with my current belt too many times to expect another 20K out of it.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever tried spraying water on the cold exhaust manifold and see if you can see water being pushed away from the gasket area by #5? It gets hot fast so you have to work quickly.

I hope the new manifold cures it.

hadn't tried that, but I have solved the issue.

                  R-Type Heat Shield? C70 1998

The R manifold is pretty nice, and I can get my turbo heat shield back on, however the bolt holes are a bit different and the shield is secured (in it's original position) but only two bolts, instead of the original 4.

Any cause for concern? Any ideas on where to source the proper R-type heat shield? is that a complete waste of time?
