97 850 Wagon with 190k, good deal? 850

This one came up locally. 97 850 wagon being sold by senior man, second owner. Car has about 190,000 miles on it, auto, leather seats, no turbo. Current owner only put on 30,000 miles in last 5 years, and has kept it looking very good, and had it regularly maintained. AC apparently works well, transmission shifts well.

Recent repairs (within last 5 years) include:
= head gasket replacement (3 years ago)
= heater core replaced (this summer)
= brakes on all wheels replaced (1 month ago)
= timing belt 2 years ago
= relatively new Michelin all-season tires

Haven't seen it yet, nor the service records, but it looks nice in the pictures.

He's asking about $3500. Is that too much for an 850 with this mileage? Is the head gasket replacement something that can leave lingering impacts? I've been looking for a good RWD Volvo wagon but they are rare in my parts, in decent shape.

Thanks!

I don't know where you live, but that is a lot of money for the miles.

Read the repair list carefully. A headgasket replacement is usually indicitive of bad valves and regular gasoline.

If the AC is really cold, not just cool, that is a plus. Heater core replacement is fairly easy, but I wonder how much antifreeze is still in the foam under the carpet.

If you close the door and hear a rattle, the window guide needs replacing.

Check for oil separator hoses being replaced when the head gasket was replaced.

I would rather drive my 1967 220, but that doesn't have air and power windows.

I agree, lot of money for high mileage. My 245 wagon had around that when I bought it 5-6 years ago, and within a couple of years was very much on the downside of the maintenance/longevity/confidence slope. Mileage takes its toll, and I can afford something better than this. My preference would be to get a RWD wagon, but they are getting rarer than hen's teeth! Someone offered to sell me his 93 945 with 100,000 miles, but he wants $6500 for it!...

Anyway, went to see the car and test drive it. Doesn't look as "excellent showroom condition" as the seller indicated. Owner is in his 70's and admitted knowing nothing about cars. He's looking at buying a 7 year Mazda to replace the Volvo, so he has no attachment to the marque whatsoever, it was just a car to him. Seemed to deal with a good thorough mechanic though, and would take it in whenever something "didn't feel right".

      Good:
= felt solid driving down the road
      = AC blowing very cold
= leather seats good shape, no rips
= lot of other repairs (ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, water pump and timing belt, control arms, cv boots, front and rear calipers and pads

      Bad:
      = pulls to the right
      = rear wiper doesn't work
= bit of rust here and there, no sign of it ever being rust-proofed (I'm in the north-east)
= recent episode of overheating (temp gauge in the red), leading to replacement of heater, makes me wonder if the headgasket may not have had another bit of excessive heat...

All in all, I'm passing on it.

It sounds like a pass. There are better 'bargains'. Don't bother to look at 1993 850s. 1999-2000 are nightmares for most of us.

I just sold my 98 R with 188K, but all of the maintenance was done + all of the preventative stuff. And the car was clean.

          Thanks Klaus.
This 850 was the SE model, and there sure were a lot of bells and whistles and buttons in there!
I'm still hoping that 93 245 comes through (lady out of town offered to sell it to me for $1800 and it only has 120,000 miles on it). Waiting for pics and details. Simpler is better, car-wise, for me...
          Cheers.

Consider a 98 V70 as well. They are hard to find, but there are deals on nice 850's out there.

If you are in the Massachusetts area you might want to check out Speciality Auto Sales in Hanson, MA.

The owner, Bob, has an impeccable reputation and has sold used Volvo's for at least 25 years. Nice guy. Almost bought a car from him. Don't let his prices scare you. You should be able to knock him down a significant amount.

BTW - He goes through every car thoroughly unless he is selling it "as is". They fix them right at his shop.

              Addendum - RWD 850

I want to add that Speciality Auto still sells RWD Volvo's even though he has none at the moment. In particular, I have seen 240, 740 and 940 wagons on his website.
