Remote control not working 850 1997

My remote control stopped working some time ago. I replaced battery, but this did not solve the problem. When I try to program it, it doesn’t even communicate – no changes on light on dashboard – ready to communicate but nothing happens. I have to remote clickers and I wonder if both died at the same time or there is something I should be looking inside my car. I do not even know how remote works on this car. It has been working fine for many years. I do not want to buy a new “clicker” because they are $120 and non-refundable. It’s not a big deal, because I can still open and close with my key, and it looks like alarm works fine, but I wonder if anybody had a problem like this.

Thank you!

My 1995 did that. The dealer wanted to put in a new remote module to fix it. For that cost, I used my key instead. I found that the remote didn't buy me much and no longer having it on the key chain made putting the keys in my pocket much easier!

There are 2 relays up under the dash, one of which could have failed. There used to be a downloadable 'manual' buried on http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/index.php

One of the PDFs is for the remote/security system. It is for the 1994/5 850 but close enough for the 1997.

Have you had any issues with the ignition switch, or do you have anything plugged into the OBD port (such as the Garmin auto thing..)? Either will keep the remotes from working. Your key being hot when you pull it out of the ignition is one indication of the switch going. If you've turned the key and got nothing (no crank) its a good sign that might need replacing soon. Not a hard (or really expensive repair) just need to have the long handled torx drivers.

If its neither of those two, I'm not sure where the remote control module is, but you *can* pull one from a junked car and have it set to your car. Not entirely sure if that is something you can do or if dealer has to put software on it.

If you're not driving it "like its stolen," are you really driving?
