P0301 Update S70

Last night I took out the Bosch Platinum 4 prong plugs and installed the Bosch Copper and gapped accordingly. The rough idle has disappeared, but I still get a CEL at about 70 MPH. Before the new plugs, the CEL would trigger at about 25 MPH. My next step today is to put in a new rotor and cap. Any other suggestions?

Your plug wires are probably just fine, but the cap and rotor do get a lot of wear and tear. You could leave the plug cover off and start the engine at night and see if there is any arcing between the wires and the deep well head.

Inspect the 4 prong plugs carefully. They have been known to lose a prong and destroy an exhaust valve.

When you state 70mph, the miss should happen at any speed so long as the rpm is over 3500 if the problem is the rotor. Putting a 'load' on the engine in top gear could be a compression problem.

Remember, the P030n is a cumulative code, meaning a single misfire will store as pending. Only multiple times on the same cylinder will the code turn on the CEL.

      P0301 Update S70

If he's watching it as he accelerates, instead of accelerating normally, he might not hit 3000rpm until 70... Since its only in cylinder 1, I'd guess its the cap instead of the rotor (that'd likely have a smattering of misfires across the board).

Pull and check for chips (to confirm) or just replace with a junkyard one that looks OK if you'd rather throw a couple of dollars at it to see. Whats a new one at the dealer now-a-days, $50?

        P0301 Update S70

Tonight I replaced the ignition rotor and cap and cleaned out the MAF. I am still getting the P0301 code thrown. When I rev the engine up I don't get it. Even when I slowly accelerate, I don't the code. I only get it when I give it some gas. It "feels" like an air leak somewhere. Anymore suggestions? I'll check the compression on it tomorrow.
