Good Year for V70? V70-XC70

Hi,
I read a post from someone who, like me, is moving away from the beloved 240DL and has questions about the V70.
My wife's a gardener. The lower profile of a station wagon lends itself to her line of work much better than an SUV. The 240's been perfect, but we've been having continual problems with it, lately.
I'm looking at the 700, 800, 900 and V70 series wagons, lately. Wondering if there's a particular year that stands out as being a good one? Something I should be looking for. Or NOT looking for. Wish I could say that I'm great with DIY stuff...but I'm not. Got a good mechanic, nearby, though.
Thanks for your time, folks.
Bob

    Good Year for V70? V70-XC70

In 1999 Volvo introduced the ETM which failed miserably. Check the throttle module and see if it has a yellow tag, which means replaced by dealer and it lasts longer than the original.

The $2500 V70 is not a bad price, especially with records.

Other than that, it has the normal maintenance items, like flushing the auto trans every 50K miles or so.

Volvo really messed up on the turning radius of these front wheel drivers, its like parking a school bus! The AWD models are even worse. Speaking of which, don't even contemplate AWD cars, the maintenance is much worse.

I would look south and west for a 1993 245! But they cost a lot.

Our friends have a V70 and we've noticed the difference in turning radius from our 1990 240DL. And I'm not a fan of all wheel drive.

Are all of the V70s front wheel drive?

We just saw a 1993 240 for sale at $2000.00. 160,000 miles. Our 1990 has a '93 engine in it that now needs a new head gasket.

Except for the 940/V90 cars, all Volvos after 1993 are FWD.

Replacing a head gasket on a red block is a piece of cake compared to the white block.

The rust problem was solved by 1991 or 92 with all body panels being galvanized. But a lot of people forget to wax the bottom of the liftgate which can get small nicks and starts to rust.

A 1993 245 for $2K is not bad, so long as it has been maintained properly. The sedans are cheaper. In the Twin Cities, it is getting harder and harder to find a GOOD mechanic for 240s.

Of course, if you have the money, a 2005+ V70 is the way to go.

Thanks for the info, Klaus. Very helpful. I found an '04 V70...but guess that's a year too early.

I know what you mean about mechanics for the 240 series. Finding the same thing here.

          Thanks, again!

I wouldn't get hung up on the differences between the 2003 and 2004 vs the 2005-2007 models. The differences are mostly cosmetic, as they refreshed in 2005 giving more updated styling and interior.

I think 2005-2007 are probably one of the best Volvos for sale out there, and one of the best used cars period IMHO, but the differences with the earlier 2003 and 2004 are not ones you should get hung up on. If you like the 2004 there's nothing really better about the next year that you should look out for.

At the current time the stock of used cars is famously low and high priced. If you found one that you're happy with you should scoop it up before someone else does!

I bought a certified 04 na v70 in 07 with 40k. I have 205k on it now and I am very happy. Yes the turning radius in larger, and I miss driving 900's. However the car is more comfortable and fuel efficiency better. I do most of the work myself but cost of maintaining this car is roughly double RWD, but the RWD was cheap to keep.

2004 ain't bad, just make sure all of the electrics work as designed and that the driver's seat is comfortable for you. The car is 7 years old and should have a new battery by now, ensure the tranny was flushed and synthetic engine oil was used.

It is probably due for struts and shocks, timing belt/tensioner was due at 105K, and the rear hatch struts are going to be in need of replacement soon also.

            Not bad.

            Klaus
