Need Used car advise on a V70 FWD. V70-XC70

Need some advise on the purchase of a used 2001-2006 V70 fwd wagon with automatic for my daughter. Our budget will probably be in the $4,500 - $7,500 range. We previously owned many 544's, 122's and 240 sedans and wagons but have no experience with the fwd Volvo's. Since we live in the Midwest, I will probably search for a clean rust free Southwest or Southern car.
What should I look out for on say a 2001 V70 wagon ?
Are there any years that should be avoided ? Any years better than other?
Any and all advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Fred,
All I can say about the '01 S60 my wife has is that it is the most relible car we have ever owned. Tires, brakes, O2 sensor, plugs, oil and filter, just the normal stuff any car takes. It still has the original battery.

My '02 V70 has been almost as good except for a door lock and the current alarm problem. Last year I replaced the battery.

I think you want to avoid the '01 and '02 models especially AWD. I think Volvo got most of the bugs out after that. Be sure to check the maintenance records.

Do not buy any 01-02 Volvo. Period.

    Volvos no longer rust. Period.

Are you handy with a wrench? Start looking for an 850 or 1998 V70.

My advice is an 03-04 V70. From what I know, they're reliable, and most repairs and maintenance can be done at home. I've driven 03's and 04's and they're beautiful. Some parts require software but if you know an independent shop, they usually do software a lot cheaper than the dealer. Just my thoughts.
