Inner track rods

I have a '94 850 with 140,000 km. Recently the front end has felt loose and so I have diagnosed the problem and replaced the Ball-joints (old design seperatly replacable) the outer tie rods and the anti-roll bar links. I think the problem lies in the inner tie rods. How tough are these to replace? Can it be done DIY like the above parts were?

Thanks

Andrew P

    Re: Inner track rods

I had a similar 'loose' feeling in my steering that felt for all the world like a suspension problem. It ended up being the bush that locates the steering column under the dash.

Simple problem worth looking for before doing the inner tie rods.

I agree with John.O - I have virtually never seen Inner tie-rod ends wear out on any car.

I considered this problem, along with the column universal joints, but have not really investigated those. If the car is at idle and you rock the wheel you can hear and feel the thump thump of the loose part. Also, if you drive down the street and hit a series of bumps you can feel it banging around. Do you think the bushing would be felt whist moving or just when turning the wheel?

        ABSOLUTELY!!!! Spot on diagnosis!

It drove me crazy until I found the problem. I'd seriously have a look at the bushing. Mine was somehow missing totally (I think a bit of TAF factor from previous work behind the dash).

          Okay:

Where is this part located? and what is necessary to remove it should it be defective. I imagine removing the steering coulmn is necessary. Doens't sound like fun...

I didn't do the work and inspecting the part on the car won't necessarily show any problem. I will ask the Volvo guys who did the replacement and maybe even find a part number for you asap. In the meantime, don't go insane!!!

    Re: Inner track rods

If you have worn tie-rod ends, it'll be obvious and they're not a common wear item on 850s. Don't guess either, if you can't see and properly diagnose a suspension problem, take it to someone with experience.

Tie-rod ends (either end) are really not a DIY job because it can't be done right without an alignment (counting the threads isn't good enough).

Re: Inner track rods- response to John O 850 1994

      John:

Diagnosing the front end of a Volvo is not terribly tough for anyone mechanically inclined, as I'm sure you'd agree. Recently I found that it was time to replace the balljoints, tie rods and roll bar links. They were all loose feeling and when I lifted the car to inspect them, this was confirmed. I have a dealer less than 5 minutes away so I count the threads and then drive it there for a alignment. The car still feels loose and there is play at the wheel when the car is lifted and rocked. I know that the problem must lie in the inner tie rods as the outers have just been replaced and they show no signs of play. But, How are these replaced? I imagine they unscrew in a similar fashion to the outers, but what exactly are the mechanics of thier assembly?

      Thanks for the propt response

      Andrew P
