I picked up my 98 V70 T5A used with 11,500 miles on it. Currently, it has about 55,000 and I've noticed my mileage has steadily dropped off by about 4 mpg since I first bought it.
I don't put my foot into it often, only when necessary. The car is all stock, no codes, dealer doesn't know why, I keep the tires inflated often, Synthetic oil & trans. fluid.
Age? Wearing in?
Any ideas?

My '98 V70 T5M has 76,000 miles on the clock & is averaging 22.4 mpg. On a trip up the Thruway it will average 27 mpg.
It has the HP turbo & is run from 20 to 80 miles a day.
I live in upstate NY so I'm driving on a hilly to mountianous terrian & local city traffic, on whatever they have at the pumps.

Well, today during my trip out to Eastern LI, I decided to play with the MPG computer. 10 miles at 60mph netted 29.6 mpg. 65 = 28.4 and 70 = 26.5.
One last thing, after reaching 130mph before coming up on traffic, I showed an average of 7.4 mpg!!! The LIE ended and the brakes were HOT!
MAN, that car did NOT want to stop pulling! (And, NO, I was not talking on the cell phone at the time!!!)
Mr. Million Mile Volvo told me he hit 161 with my exact car on the Volvo test track in Europe! Certified. Must have been different gearing, because I don't think I can get that high without bouncing off the rev limiter. Probably closer to 150 ish. It would be close.

Man, that's quick! A week or so ago, I mentioned that my mpg had dropped to around 17 or so. Well, yesterday I needed to go to Santa Clara, so I checked my mpg. It was what I was used to, around 26.x, given that I wasn't taking any special pains to "go lightly". Speeds were 70-ish, along with the rest of the traffic (this includes the two mile-long parking lot called the Sunol grade, which will eat up about 20-25 minutes). So, my 'plaint about seeing 17 suddenly was simply that I had no freeway miles for about a week, 'twas all local... So, no problem with the Chevron Supreme I'm using either...

My 99 V70 T5M sees mostly local use with my wife at the wheel. Indicated average fuel economy was 17.3. At New Year's we drove from the San Francisco Bay area to San Diego, so I reset the trip computer, and here's what I got, straight down the freeway from fillup to fillup:
Average speed 71MPH
Distance covered 460 miles
Average fuel economy 25.5 MPG
Check Engine Light ON most of the way (I checked the engine, it was still there :-) )
At the end of the trip, 1,200 miles covered, 51MPH average speed, 24.5 MPG (there was about 300 miles of mixed city/highway driving in Southern Calif.)
This is the first time EVER that I have driven between the San Francisco and San Diego areas on one tank of gas. All this with the Check Engine light on most of the time. Car runs fine, but I wonder if it would have done even better without whatever gremlin is afflicting it.

Peter: I experienced an intermittent "check engine" light last year. After verifying that the gas cap made a good seal, it still came on for no apparent reason (it wouldn't appear right after refueling). It turned out to be a faulty sensor mounted at the top of the gas tank. I don't know if the tank had to be removed to replace it. BD

Up until a few days ago, I was routinely showing 23.5 mpg avg.(I manually checked and found that this figure is really 5% higher than reality) since the car was new. It now has 65K on it. I'm inclined to suspect the "winterised" oxygenated fuel as Ray Niblett suggested. On occasion, I "get on it" to remind myself that this car (totally stock T5A)is a good performer, but to suddenly show just under 18 mpg is a surprise! We'll see fairly soon. Here in the San Francisco area, the fuels return to "normal", whatever that is, in March. BD

I'm in the Bay Area, too (Sunnyvale area). Wonder if we
are also using the same brand (Chevron is what I use).

Yes, I use Chevron Supreme also. I haven't done much freeway driving in the last week, so that will account for some of the change... My job takes me around the bay area a few times a month, so I'll be checking it soon. BD

I have a 1998 V70 T5A also that I bought new and broke-in gently, and fuel economy recently dropped 4-5 miles/gallon. Two things changed. We had a tune-up just before the fuel economy dropped, about 2000 miles ago. And, I've been filling up lately with Chevron Supreme. The good news it that my normally spunky engine has become a rocket, so I suspect the tune-up. But maybe it is both, i.e. maybe the tune-up gave it punch and maybe Chevron fuel is less fuel efficient. Here are a couple links to write-ups on Chevron fuel:

I've been getting about 21 mpg with lots of highway commuting. Whenever possible Irattempt to put my foot "in it", however the floorboard seems to always get in my way. BTW, the group theory of stealth through conservative vehicle design has, thus far, not held up well here in Portland.

If that's Portland, ME you're talking about, you aren't kidding! Although if you were in that T5 that went by my base V70 like it was standing still on I-295 the other day stay out of Scarborough.
BTW there's nothing like a 20 min. commute, half and half highway and traffic lights to really bottom out your milage.

Whay don't you just cut a big hole in your floorboard so that you can go all the way down to the street! Then your mpg and engine life would go even lower.
I'll bet all the OSP are familiar with your license plate!

My 98T5 (with a manual) recently dropped from 19.8 to 18.6
on my work commute. I did have new tires so that is one change.
Wonder if it could be oxygenated winter fuels?
