I took delivery of my 01 XC in mid-October, the car was supposed to come standard with this(it appears to be a very long bungee-type cord, that totally encircles the walls of the back) as part of the "Introductory Package", I believe. My salesman said that many XC's were being shipped without these--due to a backorder of this part. It is now pushing 3 months of having the car, and still no part.

Is this true with any other of you owners or dealers out there? Or, am I being given a line of __________.

I took delivery of an XC in late October with the Intro. Pkg. It included the grocery bag setup. When the back of the holder assembly holds a mesh stretch net that forms a pocket with the back and the bottom tray has a non-removable thin, yellow bungee cord that can be hooked to the upper section of the back. To the best of my knowledge, no removable bungee cord long enough to go around the cargo area was included. The setup is shown on page 61 of the manual.

Volvo does sell a mesh hold down net that attaches to the four eyelets around the cargo area.

To this date, I have yet to receive a XC with the Introduction Package but no grocery bag holder. Not sure why you are being told what you are being told...

I purchased my 2001 XC from a dealer's stock in late November and it came with the infamous grocery bag holder. Its actually more than just an elastic cord. It is a molded black plastic tray that fits under the rearmost panel (which you lift to get to the spare, etc.). When you lift the panel, the tray in conjunction with the back of the panel fit grocery bags and other similarily sized items (cases of beer!) and those items are secured with an elastic cord that you can clip onto regularly-spaced plastic attachment points. I found it very handy, while I had it. You can't have both the grocery bag holder and the third row seats, so when I had the third row seats installed the dealer removed and kept the grocery holder (I forgot to ask for it back). Had I known how valuable they were based on this forum, I would have auctioned it on E-bay! Anyway, my dealer, 355 Volvo/Toyota in Rockville, Maryland, may still have it and be willing to part with it cheap.

HMMMMMMM. You lost the "grocery bag holder" when the third seat is installed. I have the Sub-woofer system--which is mounted under the back panel, above the spare tire--could that be why I did not get this option--even though the window sticker states that!!

It seems that I could still use the bungee-cord dealy to secure bags, etc against the walls though. The black plastic bin would probably interfere with the sub-woofer. Right???

And the winner is...

You guessed correctly. It is not possible to fit the grocery bag holder in the V70 if you have a sub-woofer installed (so I was told). We found this out the hard way (after a couple of trips to the parts department just to help them figure out what we were trying to order). Imagine my disappointment after it arrived and realized that a lot of drilling (wood and steel) would need to be done even if the thing would fit on top of the sub-woofer. (For what it's worth, I still think it might have fit but I wasn't willing to waste time and money to find out with a leased car.)

I don't have the subwoofer so I don't know exactly how it is mounted. What I do know is that the Volvo website (www.volvocars.com/new/xc/xc_options) says that the 12" active subwoofer is "not available with the third seat". From that I would guess that both the subwoofer and the third row seats take up the space under the rear compartment panels so that you can't use the grocery bag holder. What a choice to make: great sound or groceries? I know what I would rather have! Hope you solve the mystery.

I took delivery second week of November, also with introductory package. No bunjee type cord. And in fact, I didn't know there was supposed to be one. Can you give me more details on where it says this is included in the package so I can go back to the dealer.

Get out the window "sticker" for your car--it is a legal size(landscape format) grey paper with blue border with the City and Highway MPG in big bold letters. On mine, on the far right side just above the Total Suggested Retail price, several columns up it has the following:

The packages are different is Canada than in the US, so the grocery holder is an option here, and there is no Introductory Package as such. I believe that the subwoofer, if installed, is under the central cargo section and behind that (hatch end) is a raisable flap that conceals either a shallow recess or accepts the grocery bag contraption which I chose not to order. The pictures show paper bags in a row held up by a cord. I get groceries in floppy plastic bags for which a cord would not be much of an advantage..? I will see when I take delivery of my new XC on Monday!
