01, S60T5, Replacing Steering Rack, please help.

Hellooooooo,

My 01, S60 T5, 330000Km's, might be in need of replacing the steering rack, I will still do more testing and thinking.

1. Has anyone here replaced one of these?
2. If yes did you have to remove the engine Sub-Frame?
3. How difficult was it and how long (hours)did it take?
4. And last are these Steering Rack units common at these age and Km's?

Thx in advance if you can help,

Helder

Hi, have a look here a guide for 850
    http://volvospeed.com/pdf/power_steering.pdf
this guided me few years ago to remove the rack, fix pinion seal ($50) and reinstall. remanufactured racks were priced from $600 upwards.

if you go for it, avoid time pressure and you can time to time enjoy this difficult job. I did it on ramps and there you don't have too much space to work.

still using this 850-94/ 230kkm, no other steering rack problems ever
sold my vagon 850-94/300kkm last autumn without any steering rack probs ever

A most difficult job, with good tools. Read this post for an 850, which will be similar to your car, and the response from Ken:

If all that is wrong is a leaking hose, then replace that and not the whole rack.

You must have a manual transmission, to only way to go.
