front cv axle noise V70-XC70 2004

I have an unusual noise coming from the left front axle area on my wagon. It is evident when you release the accelerator and goes away when accelerating. It sounds like a whining noise and is not a normal bearing noise that I have heard in other vehicles. It does not change when turning left or right while decelerating and it goes away immediately when you shift into neutral. My first thought was a wheel bearing even though it does not match other bearing noises I have heard, so I checked the axle with the tire removed and there is some play on the axle where it enters the transmission. Question is has anyone had experience with these axles and what type of bearing is inside the transmission that the front axle rides on?

I think I read your post at least 12 times. I doesn't sound like a bearing or axle noise, but rather a tranny or bevel gear. On older models, the axle is held in place with a circlip on the driver's side eliminating play.

The problem is that it only makes noise when there is no load on the drivetrain and that could point to the bevel gear. When was the fluid last flushed?

Check the ATF level when hot, it should be at or above the max mark.
